Title: Pulling the cluster
Post by: Feather535 on 26 October 2022, 10:17 AM
I finally bought the tool for pulling the instrument cluster after struggling for a while without it.  Now, after using the tool, the left and right sides are both free of the binnacle, so it looks like the cluster should come out the rest of the way, but it won't.  It seems to be caught on something in the center.  It just rocks from side to side but won't come straight out, even with a strong pull.  Is there something in the middle of the opening that could be keeping the cluster from coming out the rest of the way?

I presume you have disconnected the speedo cable and oil pressure gauge pipe.  Be aware that the latter will leak unless blocked by some means.

No, I haven't disconnected those yet. I can't reach them. I understood you can pull the cluster out far enough to reach behind it and disconnect the wiring, oil line and speedo instead of going under the dash. Is that wrong?

You have to unclip the speedo cable in the footwell first, otherwise it won't pull out enough. There's a bracket that holds in place (on my car at least).

Ok, but you don't have to remove the trim under the dash, right?

If memory serves, the trim has to come out. Bur it's been a while since I had the cluster out so best check under the carpet first :)

That did it--thanks!
