Bill I think you are spot-on.  The left disc which came off with only medium difficulty is a genunine item with MB star logo.  This suer-troublesome right hand one is non-genuine.  Which negates my original statement about thinking the discs had never been off.  Anyhow, this right hand hib is not a pretty state, covered in a sludge of rust and penetrating oil now.  I'll have to see how it cleans up.

So this was my first idea - I carefully cut a window so that I could drive something between the hub and the disc.  Great care was taken not to touch the hub with the grinder.  To my surprise, this proved totally unsuccessful.

I then started to think maybe the sticking point was around the central spindle (turns out I was correct).  To address this I decided I would need to cut into the face of the disc near to the spindleto relieve the stresses in the area. It was with some trepidation I started this as I absolutely did not want to touch the hub with the grinder.  I cut 5 cuts, each leaving only about 0,5mm of material at the base of the cut.  Then the outer part of the disc tapped off the inner part quite easily.

I then could prise off the remaining central part fairly easily.

Then the solution to all this :

Say Ryan, since it was stuck around the spindle and that would not budge, was there a way you could perhaps lock the disc from turning and then use the power of the engine to break the disc loose?  You'd need both wheels in the air, car in drive and the disc secured so it wouldn't turn.  In drive the other side would be turning due to the function of the differential, then just give it some gas to get both wheels spinning and break the stuck disc free...

Would it work?

That is basicaly a very good idea Ian.

Two problems (which could have been resolved)

1) the engine isn't running yet, though I expect it will be within the next week or so

2) the disc locating stud which sticks out of th ehub would have had to be driven inwards.

It could very easily go "pear shaped" as well. ;)

"That'll be 8 grand for the tools and 4 grand for the damage to the concrete, I understand it was my fault so I'll be generous and give you 7 days to pay."  ;D

There is now another huge misery - this time on the left hand side.  There is an ?alloy? bracket inside the rear brake shoe area, that encloses the spreader, and serves as an end stop for the lower edges of the shoes.  On the left side, i found it loose when I stripped the handbrake.  I didn't think too much of it initially, but when I tried to assemble yesterday, I tried to tighten up these loose bolts.  I then found that the reason they weren't screwed all the way in, was one was crossed, and really forced in like that  >:(  And guess what - it promtly sheared off when I tried to remove it.  I'll reflect on the problem for a couple of days, but I think the hub will have to come out now so that I can get a drill in there.  Lots of bad words were said....

Just used the same procedure to remove the stuck discs on the back of my 190E, here's how you do it:

car up on 4 stands, all 4 wheels off the ground, rear wheels removed.

Give the discs a good soak in Inox (pentrating oil)

Remove the hex locating bolts from the discs

Start the car and put it into first gear (its a manual) running at about 1500rpm, slam on the brakes

Kill engine as soon as the discs are free, remove calipers, caliper holders and discs.

Stuck discs removed.

That sounds quite simple, and effective.

Sounds like another trip to that thread repair "specialist" you found....

koan, any thread repairs I require will be done by someone OTHER than that idiot.....

I think the first thing I will try is an eeze-out.  Maybe i'll be lucky.  Just never know.

Maybe I'm just unlucky, but the only thing I've experienced that's easy with those eeze-outs, is breaking them. do they ever actually work ?

s class

I have a good quality set.  In my experience, though there is a limit to the tightness of the studs they can handle.  As soon as its sufficiently tight that you really need an eeze-out, then usually its too tight for an eeze-out to cope with  :P
