Not so happy at low revs

Thanks to all for the seatbelt advice...good to know you're all out there. My new ('77) 280se automatic is running nicely, but I have a few small concerns...

-He isn't so happy at low revs - particularly when reversing or parking - the motor frequently cuts out, and when the motor is just idling it often feels as though it might be on the verge of cutting out. I also have to give him quite a lot of gas immediately after ignition (despite automatic choke). At the last check up (before I bought it) the mechs. fiddled with the exhaust for reasons the previous owner didn't fully explain...
-When turning with the steering wheel fully turned I get a high pitched squeak.

Apart from that it's 1600 kilos of  ;D
