Hello everyone. I spent many hours over the last 3 months rebuilding my Mercedes om617 engine (300SD). I video documented the entire process and I made this website. The website has a parts list download and 22 videos so far. There's also a donation button :) I should be finished in the next couple of weeks. Enjoy.

This is incredible! We will no longer have to be in the dark regarding rebuilding one of these. I may need this information at some point since the OM617 in my W116 has over 350,000 miles in it, and I have one in my fintail wagon project.

That's exactly why I created the site nothing like this existed. now there's one consolidated site for all the information and how to videos that show exactly how to do it.

Wow!
I don't think I'll ever get to the level and have the courage to embark on a project like yours.
But your generosity/modesty to share your knowledge/experience is what keeps the spirit of this site.
Bravo!!!
Impressive!!!

I've no diesel W116, so won't comment on the content, but this is definitely very welcome input to the wider community. Thanks for taking this on and sharing!
Have you considered using a head mounted action cam, like a GoPro or similar? It'd free up your hands and you could show all the extra details of the work you need to put the camera down for :)

As an aside, my W124 has an M104 engine with 330kkm on it and you can still see the cross-hatch on the cylinder bores too. I think TJ had a high-mileage example too, same thing.
The don't make them like they used to anymore...

p.s.: Your use of "thousandths" in respect of mm is correct; it's just the number of decimals past the comma. No differences between metric/imperial there, other than needing to convert back and forth.

Yeah I thought about using a head-mounted GoPro I'm just too cheap to go buy one :)

I really never planned to make this site it just ended up happening. I definitely need a more professional camera setup!

Let's keep these things running. I had the pleasure last Friday of driving from Atlanta to Chattanooga, swapping out of an '03 CLK430 into an '83 300SD, and driving from Chattanooga to visit one of the forum members in Knoxville. I had not driven an OM617-equipped vehicle in just shy of two decades. It was a pleasure, and the OM617 is my favorite sounding diesel motor of all time.

Hey I also live in Atlanta. I am in Roswell right on the Chattahoochee River by the North River tavern bar. What part of town do you live in?
