Title: New Camshaft
Post by: Mergyver on 29 December 2019, 03:37 PM
Hey guys,

I picked up a NOS Mercedes camshaft for my 1979 300SD. It came wrapped in wax paper and was covered in this brown waxy kind of coating. Any idea how to remove it? I tried my fingernail, no go. Tried scrapping with a razor blade but it adheres to the shaft to well and doesn't seem to peel off.

I tried brake cleaner and denatured alcohol to no avail.

I am thinking about heating it up and trying to melt it off (using an oven or heat gun).

What do you guys think? Anyone have any ideas?

Try acetone, it's a lot stronger solvent or parts cleaner solvent should work. I think the coating is Cosmoline. Gasoline is suppose to work also.
