my 280 shifts pretty harshly from 2-3 and smoothly from 3-4... it doesn't slip but more-like snaps into gear... does this transmission have an adjustable modulator like the later models?

Chaz,

styria mentions two types of modulator valves which is correct.  My 1973 280S had the all-metal modulator valve, and my 1980 280SE has the metal body/plastic top type, which I suspect yours would also use.  To be sure, if you do replace the modulator valve, take your transmission serial no. with to the dealership to ensure the correct part.
