Well after much looking, searching, talking, and head scratching, & reading Youtube reviews, I have gone in another direction entirely, "thanks to my 22 year old nephew's input".

I take my phone,  and the "sound bar" into the car and off I go.  (or I can take the  tablet or ipod or whatevever usb stick I wish to load music onto)
I place it in the middle on the back seat and bluetooth the  music  across (lots of spotify) and simply...it works!

Did some serious looking and decided on a portable sound bar version rather than a fixed permanent version on the back parcel shelf,

Found a fantastic unit which has superb bass at "Jaycar" and bang, I'm already enjoying the result.

It pairs with my phone everytime I turn it on, (or anyone elses for that matter).

I figure if I'm not happy after a while I can always go down the hard wired route of having the car fitted out with speakers and an amp, altho I now see no need for  that option.

Went on a run yesterday, took the soundbar with me and then sat with it at the beach.

It runs of inbuilt rechargeable batteries or you can plug it in to a 12 volt power source.  Has inbuilt FM radio as well.

Best part............it does what I want,  it certainly has great volume and clarity  and when I finish, I use it inside the house with my flat screen tv.

And I don't need to mess around rewiring my car interior. I've taken all wires and speakers out and even the aerial is gone, a long time ago.

All that for $149 (Australian)

One of many types out there available at specialist dealers.

I can say it sounds crisper, sharper and clearer than the original sound of the factory Becker ever did. The soundbar is a big step over the sound of the "70"s" inside a car.

The volume at highway speed is more than adequate, I never got it anywhere near full volume, ( just don't expect it to blow your windows out.) Its not meant for that.

It's meant to last anywhere up to 3.5 hours at full volume before plugging it back in to the cigarette lighter for a recharge.  More than enough for me.
The Becker stays where it is, in the dash............looking good, not connected and not used.

never thought of a soundbar! Nice idea!

Nice idea, but the boom box looks to new. You need a bluetooth speaker with a more classic touch! :)
I would suggest to use a Marshall bluetooth speaker: https://www.marshallheadphones.com/us/en/speakers/bluetooth/
350SE (silver) from 1979 (sun roof, air condition, central locking, Becker Mexico, ....)

Nice to learn of Marshall products.  They make great guitar amps.

I have a Sonos Move that also works like that though the form is entirely non-automotive looking.

I don't think I could hack the form of it. Good idea tho
