M117 Valve spring compressor - made it today and it works!!!!!

As mentioned last week I felt my life really wasn't complete with an M117 valve spring compressor and I've had the plans for one for a long time  and the "Koan approved model" for the 6.9 I made doesn't fit the 450 motor.

I have stared for months at the one at etoolcart.com but with the value of the dollar it would have run to about AUD$500 landed.

Bought the bits I didn't have yesterday and finished it today.

I tried it on my scrap M117 motor that I want to get the hydraulic lifters and other bits from and it worked perfectly.

Clears the oil line nicely and looks like it would work on many other M-B engines as it is adjustable for height.

I am sure it would also work on a 6.9 motor so long as it clears the oil line - will see when I change the one noisy lifter I have on mine.

Anyway here it is and after I've removed the useful parts from my old 450 motor it is available as promised if still required for Ryan1980's "failure to proceed".

Isn't it nice when things just work.

truly awesome work.

What does the hook actually hook onto / into ?

WGB

The hook goes either side of a camshaft lobe and gives the pivot point.

Very nice work WGB.

My first attempt at a 6.9 compressor was something along the same lines but I didn't get the angles and lengths right, it failed dismally, wouldn't stay on the valve.

Will the handle clear the body on an 8 ?

You've painted it, I thought it would be finished in "WA" plate ;)

My "WA plating" comment was only a toung in cheek remark - mainly in reference to a certain someone over east who tarted up his intake manifold with gold spray can paint ;) Kinda reminds me of my friends fullly sick bicycle that his dad gave the same treatment, It did kinda look cool, but i was 5 at the time ;)

Hi Bill,

You are very good with you hands, well done.

Make a blue print and market the drawings?

Here it is as previously posted.

What kinda beer do you drink, i figure i owe you a few!

Hi Ryan,

I took out 1 bank of hydraulic lifters and pressure pads this morning from my scrap 450 motor and will try to do the other side tomorrow before it heats up.

You can have it after that but I would like it back before I pull my 6.9 down and go looking for my chirpy cam follower just in case my 6.9 version isn't as good as this one is.

Let me know what your plans and timing are for your repairs and we will sort out something.

A colluege told me about a special tool to prevent the valves to fall into the cylinder if you do the work without removing the heads.
No it's not a compressed air adaptor to the spark plug, it's 2 meters of electrical wire pushed in through the spark plug hole and then rotate the crankshaft till the piston is at tdc.
Don't know if anyone tried it but it sounds like it works...

Work on each pair of valves at cylinder TDC plus about 30 or 40 degrees, that way the valve spring will compress enough to get the rocker arm out without the valve hitting the piston. If you do "lose" a valve it will sit on the piston but still protrude from the guide.
