M117 Head Bolts

I've been doing some further sorting through and cleaning of the threads, on the original head bolts for my 450's M117.

Interestingly, AutohausAZ only list three types of bolts. These are a M10x155mm, M10x80mm, M10x55.

In the set of bolts I have here, there are four lengths. Would I be correct in saying that the ones not listed are the short ones for the cam bearing towers? I seem to have misplaced my measuring apparatus. ;)

Sounds of silence - but I can't help - no knowledge.

I still have the scrap 450 motor and can remove some bolts sometime if you really need to know.

On a 6.9 there are 3 lengths of bolts and a lesser diameter bolt through the cam tower into head, not block.

When I went off to get replacements from MB I had the lengths required but that info was no good, all they used was count per engine, 8 of these, 18 of them and 10 of the other.

I wasn't too confident I'd end up with the correct bolts but I did.

Not a lot of help.

Alas, the silence has now been broken. 8)

I'm now quite confident that the shortest ones are those for the cam towers that bolt into the heads only. Thinking about it, I remember the shorter bolts that fix the head to the block being the INBUS ones with the sort of knurled head.

The main reason I ask is that all the head bolts from the three M117s ended up in the same box! It's now under control though.

Alternatively, you could have procured another 'measuring device'.

Indeed, I have done so, s class (it only took about twelve hours ;)).

Thus, the relevance of this post is now waning. I suppose the detail will be confirmed when I fit the heads.

BTW, on the subject of procurement, I went shopping this afternoon and purchased a new windscreen, a seal from the dealer, and a tube of the proper non-setting mastic. I'm optimistic this time. 8)

Are you going to have another go at DIY fitment?

That's the plan. We'll see how it goes.

I hope you intend to wear a lab coat this time, so that the "silicone experiment" dosent explode all over yourself and the car again ;)

TJ 450

I certainly won't be making that mistake again. I've only just completed removing that silicone! 8) For some reason I thought it was Butyl Mastic and I just plastered it everywhere. ::)

I couldn't believe my eyes when i saw the mess on the 6.9  8)

I still remember the days when it would take 3 hours to coax you out of the psychotic trance you were in up tree on the front verge after someone spilled 3 grains of sand on the carpet of the 450 ;) OK, slight exaggeration, but wow, how times change  ::)

TJ 450

I was even more pedantic when I had the Volvo 760. It was a case of "enough's enough" and I'm a little more relaxed these days. Trying to keep things that clean is rather stressful.

Though, the silicone disaster was a nightmare in any case.

Sorry Guys - back to the topic.

I have scanned these pages from one of my manuals and I hope they show the position of the bolts - listed A to F although I cannot find an "F"

There is also a list of the size and length under the third list on the other page.

Bill

Is that "f" on the RH head underneath the filler cap?

Nice work with the scans, Bill... that is a huge help. Many thanks.

I should just be able to pick out the best of each size and get the required quantity now.

That would be "f", Koan. That particular bolt was unique from memory.
