Ignition tumbler a no hope thing?

Are there simply no more ignition tumblers (p/n 116 462 00 79) anywhere? I don't have a problem, yet, but am trying to be proactive. I have a new-from-MB steering column lock assemble, ignition tumbler barrel but cannot find the tumbler anywhere, including the Classic Center in Irvinw, CA.

Are we all "dead" at some point?

Often one on ebay. You would have to buy the complete unit and extract what you want.

There were 4-5 different lock tumblers used on the W116. Assuming that your 350se is the car in question and that it's left hand drive, the part number you make reference to is for a generic tumbler with "lock undefined"  This means that you'd get a tumbler with a new key that won't fit anything else on your car.  Here are the part numbers relevant to your car for DEFINED lock numbers:

Up to chassis 021216 and chassis  part number 000-462-79-30.

From chassis 021217 part number 601-460-03-04 is used.

For 350se models with central locking,up to chassis number 046046 part number 601-460-03-04 is also used.

For 350se models without central locking, up to chassis 046179 part number 601-460-03-04 is also used.

For models with central locking from chassis 046047 up to 049497 part number 116-462-01-79 is used.

For models without central locking from chassis 046180 up to 049425 part number 116-462-01-79 is also used.

For models with central locking from chassis 049498 part number 116-460-06-04 is used.

For models without central locking from chassis 049426 part number 116-460-01-79 is also used.

For the UNDEFINED lock tumblers, the following is to be considered:

Up to chassis 021216 part number 116-462-00-79 is used.

From chassis 0212217 part number 000-462-93-30 is used.  This same number also applies to models with central locking up to chassis 046046, as well as models without central locking up to chassis 046179.

For late models with central locking from chassis 046047 until production end, part number 116-462-02-79 is used.  This same part number also applies to late models without central locking from chassis 046180 until production stop.

Hope this is helpful.

Someone had better start rebuilding these or eventually we're all going to be using toggle switches to start our cars. I also worry about the future of W116 interiors as there are so many foam panels that would cost a fortune to have reproduced. It's not like the older models like the W111 where you just installed a new headliner, wrapped new vinyl over the B-pillar covers, had the dash restored, and called it good.

PSA to all. Keep your tumblers lubed. It's amazing how nice a tumbler with fresh synthetic grease is to turn.

But please research how these tumblers work before tearing into them. It's easy to get lost and not know how to reassemble it once you get it out of your steering lock.

Speaking of steering locks, replace those as well at the first sign of trouble. Either pull it out and disable the lock or install a new one.

I thought I did a post sometime back on this very issue that had pictures and everything.  Does anybody remember that?  I can't seem to find it.

No need for despair here, I'd say. I must have said no to at least 5 of them the last 12 months. NOS and cheap(ish)
