Title: identification help
Post by: w116john on 15 August 2013, 02:48 PM
hi all
Can somebody tell me what this is for ? should it be connected to something its from the top rear of of my 76 450se engine block.

also there is a very intermittent groan /grind from the rear left of the car more noticeable at low speeds and when turning right, especially if the car has been idle for a while. The wheelbearing has been changed recently and the powersteering fluid is a little below the correct level?

any help appreciated

thanks

If this were a 6.9 and that was the rear of the right hand side of the V then it would be the temperature sensor for the instrument panel. Is the engine temp showing okay?

Groaning from one side when turning could be a number of things of course. Check that sway bar is not rubbing against the wheel. Clicking noises when turning under power is usually the drive shafts.

thanks adam

the temp sensor works but bounces around sometimes i assumed it was a bad ground.
the noise from the rear is not very frequent, and i am not too worried at the moment

hi
could it be an ignition switch over valve for the a/c, to help with idle when a/c is on?  a/c disconnected at the moment

This is the hot start magnet.
Never seen it on US models.
It lifts up the control piston in the fuel distributor, for about 3 seconds, during starting  to flush the injection lines when the engine is hot.

I thought this was standard on all k-jets.

Does your 280E have one?

Maybe only the early models had one.

Won't work without it. No loose cables floating around ?

hi

no sign of one at the moment, a closer inspection is required.

any idea where the other end of the cable would be connected to?
