High uncontrollable reving on start up

Hi all

Well my car is nearly ready for the road. However when I turn it over to start, and it kicks over it revs it's guts out. No pushing of the accelerator.
I switch off .
I have had the fuel distributor rebuilt, I have checked the throttle body thinking it maybe stuck but it isn't. Has anyone had this problem or have any idea what it maybe.
My car is a 1977 280 se m110 k jet.

Many thanks

ptashek

Does it go to around 1500rpm, and then gradually settles over 2-3 minute to normal idle around 780rpm, or is it literally going to redine and never stops?

The first behaviour is perfectly normal for a K-Jet car.

When you push the air plate down does it have resistance and push back up?  Ideally test with engine running but in your case try with ignition on only.  The air plate is the big round disc in from of the FD.

Second check the throttle linkage all the way down to the actual throttle body plate, starting with the gas pedal in the car - to be sure it isnt stuck, then all the way to the throttle.  TB is down lower.

3rd, check for massive are leaks.

Hi

Firstly thank you both for replying.
On start up it goes straight to redline full revs. No in between.
Yeah I had and rechecked the linkages, hoping that it was an easy fix. Unfortunately or I guess fortunately they move freely right from the pedal to the linkage on the throttle body. I have also removed the fuel distributor and checked the throttle body moved freely and it does.
The air flap moves freely and when I push down and take my hand off it returns smoothly to the top. I have had the fuel distributor rebuilt recently.
When turned on start the air flap moves easy up and down and you can hear the fuel pump.
When the car is turned over and started the air flap lowers by itself to the lowest point. Pushing the accelerator does not change or do anything, the motor is red lining.

Thanks

That seems to be the problem.

You will need to remove the Fuel Disti and the the entire Air flap assembly and see what happened inside. Either the plunger on FD is stuck or something amiss with air flap assy.
