high revving at standstill

Hi all,
i decided to take the bullet and take newly acquired 6.9 6181 for its first drive >5 km in over 10 yrs...upthe freeway in perth to inlaws and back...made the trip alive without incident (chris - close your eyes, the cruise control worked; momentarily!)....problem is after car warmed up, the revs were very high and without breaking, the car would pull itself up to 70kmh and sit there!  i pulled over and tried to adjust the air/feul mixture (i am no mechanic) via that twisty cap but although it resolved it initially, it was back to high revving after 5 mins...th cap was adjusted all the way so i couldnt do any more (even aircon with full blast makes no dent on the revs)...if i put the car in neutral at the lights, it sat on about 2500rpm! anyhow, if anyones has any ideas that a simple man could try,id be grateful for your input
best regards
nathan

Nathan that's bizarre.  My thoughts were towards the idle speed screw which is probably the fuel/air mixture you've already played with.  Don't know how the 6.9 differs from my 3.5 except that with mine, this screw should only be adjusted after the engine is warm.  There may be an issue with the auxillary air valve too but I'll leave it for the other 6.9ers to comment on.

How far did you turn the this cap?  If it's the same thing as my screw, I had to turn it clockwise I think about 3 revs before the hot idle would come back below 1000rpm.

thanks Oscar,
after disturbing a young lady in a carpark by asking her for a screwdriver, i turned the fuel/air ratio thing all the way possible, no subsequent change! the engine was warm...
thanks

thanks a lot for the input Oscar and styria,

please do not read on if you have a shred of respect for me...
when i got to my folks today where i keep 6181, i sat in the car and turned it on...high revving...i thought what has changed in the last few weeks...then i realised i had an accelerator pedal i didnt have before...the original one was rusted off when we bought it...dad had bought a new pedal, but not secured it...the damn mat was pushing on this new pedal and preventingit from returning to neutral...removed the pedal, problem solvered
yes, i am challenged - really challenged!

 :D :D :D That's brilliant!

You wont get heckled Nathan, following the laughter is the envy brewing wishing all my problems were solved that easily. :)

It's fantastic when this stuff happens, it's like a big win, or a eureka moment, "is that all it was??!!" U f*n beaudie!  Sorry, just reminiscing of my last one which was oh so long ago  :-[
