Help, my car is bleeding... and warm up is too noisy!

Two annoying things, about by 6.9, just wanted people's thoughts...

The suspension is leaking hydro fluid at the front LH corner and under the front of the engine... it was a small leak when I got it (couple of drops per night) now after 2000km its a small pool of oil (10-20ml I would say) and I'm about to top up my hydro fluid... The 5 cells and other items were replaced under Des' ownership, and I was just wondering if its something like fluid lines need to be re-tightened after a certain bedding-in period or something....?

Also, when cold it revs annoyingly high, its only 1400 or so rpm, and when it warms up it settles down to a normal 500 rpm blob-blob-blob idle... is there any way to adjust the cold idle speed to 900 or 1000rpm?  At 1400rpm putting the car into reverse feels like its trying to remove the diff from under the car...  BTW I'm going to do the styria disconnect 9th fuel injector mod tonight...

Oh and lastly the sunroof leaks but there's nothing inexpensive that can be done about that... :-(

I.

Oh and now she smokes when she gets a dose of hydro fluid on the exhaust manifold :-/

Des?  :D

I think he's gone for good. Taken off into the inescapable mystic zone that is RR land... :(

Anyway, I think that cold rev speed is quite normal though, all our w116's rev like that when cold...but if you really hate it I'm sure someone will be able to tell you how to lower it.

When adjusted correctly all 116's should have a steady idle whether hot or cold. I have read how to do it in the manual, but I think it is best to leave it to an expert.

Thanks guys.... getting my "violin" out I'll just bitch for a moment that I've just moved house and am snowed under at work and completely exhausted.. unfortunately the last thing I have time to do is carefully analyse the suspension and sunroof, so I'm going to pay a specialist on Thursday to go over the hydro system looking for loose and perished hoses... i need the car to get to work... for the moment I'm back to the RX7...

The cold idle speed is something I think I can handle if someone can explain to me where the adjustments are and what I'm looking for... i't can't be that hard to adjust..

As for the sunroof, when I drive in the rain or it rains heavily, water comes in from above the sun visor, down the visor and into my lap in a very undignified way.  I think even once I saw some water come in above the centre rear-view mirror...  Have to re-check my receipts but I'm pretty sure I read Des put in F&R window seals... in any case its not a big issue yet as in my new house I have a large enough garage to park it in, and work is under cover, so the car doesn't cop as much rain as could be.  Sorry to you purists who won't drive their 6.9s in the rain, this all must sound awful to you but I did buy my car to be a daily driver, not sit around looking purty waiting for dry weekends to go out and enjoy it.

Ha Ha, not all of us "baby" their cars.
I live on a dirt road and the 6.9 is sideways more often than not!!   ;D
Also, I drive it in "hail, rain or shine."

The front water leak could be the windscreen seal.

13B, sorry to hear about the leaks.
Re the over revving, I've been told previously with d-jets the auxillary air valve lets too much air thru.  K-jet's are similar though I have no experience.  But here's an easy mod  I was told about and that I've tried previously with success.
You just need to restrict the air flow to the aux air valve and it can be done without bashing down the aux air valve.  I was told on the MBCNSW forum to place a hollowed spark plug thread into the intake hose of the aux air valve.  I instead used a 3cm piece of 7.5mm injector fuel hose.  It reduced the air flow enough to reduce the revs significantly from the 1500-1800approx cold idle I was getting in the 350.  The hose to the k-jet aux air valve looks different and maybe bigger, but try experimenting with some kind of thick hollow tubeing inserted into the aux air valve intake and see how you go.

Its the hydropneumatic pump on the front of the engine, its leaking...

So they're sourcing a good used pump so this should be fun... here's hoping the same pump is used on all self-levelling V8 engines...

You can get a rebuild kit for these, but they are damn difficult to install and get right. They operate at around 2000 psi, so it is critical that they are installed correctly, or they will leak.

I'm sure Des had work done on that pump didnt he????  major deja vus......I thought it was mentioned in some old threads.
sigh....sitting back contemplating the next purchase..!

I think you're right, but Tasmania is a long, and expensive way to go for a warranty repair - unless you take the pump off and send it to them, and then the car is off the road for who knows how long. I would try and find one at a wreckers. Try Dave Walton in Brisbane. He will send it to you. His number is 07 - 5532 8888.

I was told just that, but the person looking at my car says they've had better luck with good used pumps, so he's sourcing one of those...

Craig, that's incredibly cheap.  I paid $90AUD but it also had a second large O ring of a different diameter.  But my old pumps only have one.

13B, where abouts from the pump is the leak coming from?  It sounds like it's leaking externally, I wonder if it's leaking internally as well.  Something I think I told Des was to make sure the inlet fitting is very tight.  The outlet banjo fitting has to be tight too though not as much and there should be two copper seals, one either side of the banjo.  The pump will leak externally if attention isn't given to these connections.  Especially the inlet pipe.  It would only leak when the engine was started.  No stripped threads or scored contacts, the only way it would stop leaking was to tighten the locknut of the inlet pipe very tight.

I rebuilt mine last year and I can tell you I haven't lost a drop since.  Yay, but it was an expensive road getting there as far as going thru $300+ worth of hydro oil before I worked out what or was told what was going on.  Are you losing everything to the floor?  My rear seal on the pump's shaft was leaking causing oil to go into the sump.  I don't know where the oil goes in the case of a 6.9 since it's a dry sump and all.  Anyway, I've got a spare from a 6.9 that I'll be rebuilding next week hopefully.  My spare worked for a few months before it too started leaking thru the rear seal but not as bad as before.  You may have to get a recon one just to save oil and if you want, I can give you the one off my 280S.  But I'd recommend getting a kit to reseal the old one.  In the meantime, the 280S one is available for indefinite loan if you want it.  As far as I know it doesn't leak internally or externally.

Thanks for the offer Oscar, I'll not worry about it for the moment, as the guy looking at my car reckons he can source one and get the car back on the road tomorrow.  I'll see what he turns up and make sure I get the old one back.  In the back of my mind a good used one is probably not the best way to go but if mine was rebuilt and it hasn't lasted, this gives credence to my repairer saying he's done better with good used pumps than rebuilding old ones.

I'll have to check if my engine oil is especially thin due to hydro fluid ending up in it...

My previous 6.9, #3904, leaked power steering fluid, my 450SE leaked engine oil... they always leak something methinks.

As they say about Buick's, if they're not leaking, their empty !
