help!! Loud engine knocking noise... :(

I think the first priority is to get the car timed correctly and then see if there is any valve damage before you spend one further cent on it.

I presume the agenda would be:

1) Remove sparkplugs and cam covers, remove fan shroud and fan , remove battery and mount, place a piece of cardboard over the radiator.
(if not already done)
2)remove the timing chain tensioner,
3)remove the rocker arms (keeping them in their correct order for reassembly)
4)At this point checking for obvious unequal valve stem heights.
5)Correct the cam timing and re-fit rocker arms
6) Re-fit old tensioner temporarily (not strictly necessary but not hard to do) and see if engine will turn right through two crankshaft revolutions without binding while checking valves for excess clearances.
7)With the chain tensioned check for stretch (any obvious damage will have been seen while turning motor over)

If at this point all was well
1) the old tensioner can then be removed
2) I would then remove alternator and lift power steering pump out of the way still on it's hoses,
3) pull the pins for the sliders ( I have a new pin-puller sitting in it's packet waiting for a go) one slider at a time and replace.
4) Open the plug that covers the bottom pivot for the tensioner slipper - withdraw the hollow pivot pin - remove the slipper from the engine and replace the liner
5) Replace slipper and using a small screwdriver through the centre slide in the pivot pin (This is a tricky part).
6) Put it all back together again with new tensioner(Prefilled with oil) and gasket.

Decision time for the chain can then be made at this point but if there is a lot of stretch you will probably need new camshaft cogs as well as a new chain.

If you decide to change the chain and/or cogs they can be done later and all you will need is a new timing chain tensioner gasket.

comments on the "agenda" - gratefully received

That is a very sensible agenda, Bill. 8)

Aligning that tensioner slipper sure is a pain, although fortunately on an M117, you don't have to remove the coolant pump housing in order to get at it. ;)

Hi Bill,

That is a lot of good economic sense.  I suggest that at some point a compression test is needed to verify there are no bent valves.  I can't see though how this could be safely done until all the new parts are installed - in other words, the compression test follows at the end of your agenda.

One would not want to do the compression test until the tensioner and guides have been replaced, for fear of repeating the mishap.

I await the outcome of this investigation with anticipation.

I've had a further thought - without going back over all the posts, I think I recall that the heads were overhauled?  Is it possible that too much material has been skimmed off the heads?  If so, this would worsen the chances of a worn tensioner managing to do its job.

Once your agenda has been completed, if excessive chain stretch is indicated, it could indicate chain stretch, excessive skimming, or both . Hmmm.  The compression test results could help indicate which is the issue (excessive skimming would result in a raised compression ratio).  also, did this car have any history of pinging before this mishap?

You raise a very interesting point, s class. I'll leave it to Ryan1980 to elaborate on this.

I haven't heard anything and wonder if anything is planned for this next weekend.

I am free at this stage on Saturday but working Sunday.

Quite happy to help/lend tools/lend expertise/opinion/whatever if needed.

On Saturday morning, I'll be getting my 450 up and running. I'll be most likely be free in the late morning into the afternoon to attend, if required.

hey guys

if you could come around and help me get this sorted out that'd be great. Anytime saturday is fine, just let me know!
Hopefully it doesnt take too long to get the timing chain issues sorted out, then i can put the rest of it back together.
Just let me know.
I really appreciate all the help you guys have given me!

Cant wait to drive the 116 again :)

WGB

I'm free Saturday Morning and if it is going to get hot - the earlier the better.

Plus it's the best part of a 90 minute drive for me.

PM me with address and/or telephone.

I assume we will remove rockers, see if anything is bent and if motor will turn over.

If it is OK reset timing and put it back together again, then change sliders and tensioner slipper liner.

Is this car parked in the shade? (He hopes)

Bill

saturday morning it is then! its parked in the shade.
ill pm u now..

Thanks for the details.

I have a family lunch in Vic Park as my Son is off to Europe on Sunday and the earlier the better for me.

I will try to get there for 9am and hope relief arrives before I have to go.

I'll be able to attend later in the morning which sounds like it should be suitable.
