If you are any good at tool making here is the design for the M117 valve lifter

Thanks Bill, I would certainly attempt it if I had the facilities. ;)
I seem to recall there being one available for the M117 engines, off the shelf? I will have to investigate this, because in any case, it would be a useful tool to have.

I've been ringing places all morning and i certainly cant find anywhere that sells this tool.
I sent an email to autohausaz, perhaps they can get one?

It probably helps that I have done it a bit but I just use a large screwdrive using the cam as a pivot (not the ground surface, the cast surface) and push down on the valve lash cap, another screwdriver in the other hand (!) to push the rocker out NO FINGERS NEAR!!!....BUT where are you up to? to reset the cam remove the cam chain tensioner (with the RHS and crank in the correct position) and using the appropriate socket on a bar turn the LH cam backwards and move the slack chain (no tensioner remember) one tooth on... you may have to modify this depending on where your cam is at, also .... BEFORE going much further and considering not much more damage can be done, do a compression test on the left bank, Ill bet on a few bent valves :(, in which case you might have to consider another engine or a tow to a specalist, not saying you cant do it but its not a good choice for your first engine strip.
Roger (buy mine it has a nice nearly new engine!)

Here's the one I was thinking of.

Not cheap, but it would certainly do the trick. I would like to purchase one, as well as some other tools, but it won't be for several weeks.
As a last resort, Herbert at the Starshop should have one.

Are you a member of the Mercedes club of WA ? If so, perhaps they have a "tool pool" containing one of these valve lifters, as they do in Victoria - or if not, perhaps one of the members has one. Might be worth a phone call.

It looks like one day of my Christmas break is going to be dedicated to making an M117 valve lifter.

I have eyed up the etoolcart.com one for a few months but the value of the dollar and cost of freight vs the relative simplicity of the design makes a DIY attempt worthwhile.

From whats been seen on your previous DIY tools, you are just the man for the job, and i know it will be made with military precision  8)

i would certainly appreciate it bill - and you are more than welcome to test it on my car :P

I haven't heard anything from Ryan or TJ but if you want to borrow the valve spring compressor or a couple of  hours of expertise just make contact.

It's a matter of organising a time I think. I'll allow Ryan to comment.  ;)
BTW, will the valves need to be supported whilst removing the rockers, or are the springs still retained without the rockers. The idea is to remove all rockers and reset the valve timing.

Valves and springs are held by the valve collets and aren't affected.

All you will be doing is compressing the valve springs and removing the rocker arms (making sure they all go back in their correct respective places on reassembly or you will get accelerated cam/rocker wear).

This will leave all the valves seated so long as none of them have bent stems. If the engine still won't turn with all the left bank rockers removed then remove all the right bank as well and if it still won't turn - there is a very big problem.

Excellent, that's what I was expecting, thanks Bill. 8)
