ok so the chain basically needs to move one tooth to the left (when looking at it from the front of the car) ??
and i need to replace one slider.
or should i replace everything? the chain looks pretty new.
perhaps i should just order the slider and 2 tensioners?
what's people thoughts?

hmm is that the genuine brand of hose clamp? wish i could take credit for that, but the previous owner did all of the work :P

For the chain, one tooth to the left when viewed from the front of the car is correct.

I would replace the chain, tensioner and both sliders plus the lining for the tensioner slider. Everything except the tensioner slider is available on AutohausAZ. I purchased a tensioner slider lining from Westpoint Star for something like $30 when I did my 450.

At a minimum, the tensioner and both sliders could be changed, then a measurement of chain stretch after that will determine whether or not you really need to replace the chain. I wouldn't trust the other slider.

Yes, that is one of the genuine brands of hose clamp.  8)

Careful!  You need to adjust the engine again until the crank damper shows 0 degrees.  Then you will be able to see better which way each cam sprocket must adjust.  When the crank is at 0 degrees, then adjust the cam sprockets so that they are as close to lining up as possible.  Remmeber, the crank will have to go twice around again.

That's the site.

There's any number of places in Oz to get all the parts.  Just do a price and availability check first for lead times and compare.  From Autohaus you're looking at 4-5 business days after paying.

BTW, I'm impressed with what you've done so far.  Keep it up

It is usually cheaper from the 'States, even with the current exchange rate. In Perth, the other options are Lintrex (Bentley), Euro Car Parts(Kenwick), M-B Dealers. I would get quotes for the parts there and compare. I doubt anyone will have the parts in stock locally. MB Spares is another option, although I have no experience buying from them.

I have used M-B Spares in Canberra and the guys are very knowledgeable.

All this collection of parts came from M-B Spares when I did the timing chain on my M117 450.

Notice the two packets of camshaft oiler connections - $14 of very worthwhile insurance.

I would ask them for prices and compare with costs from autohaus.az.

How long ago was that WGB?

Surprised to see a shiny aux air valve, thought they were as rare (or rarer) as hen's teeth.

A little over three years ago.

Just asked and they sent me one. About $185 from memory.

I still have the old one and I am sure that it could be fixed with the "Hammer modification" that was mentioned at the time on this site.

It fixed all my idling problems at the time - full stop.

big thanks to tim and dave for coming over yesterday and helping me out!

the engine just won't turn to the right... i took the oil sump off and found a lot of peices of broken plastic. There was also one little piece down where the timing chain goes, which i attempted to get out... unfortunately i think i only succeeded in pushing it down further (i cant see it anymore).

Anyways the engine will turn to the left, and back to the right... until it gets to a certain point, then refuses to turn anymore.

Im sure tim or dave can elaborate more on whats going on, hopefully someone knows what to do!

IMHO, everything needs to be reset as the valves are interfering or there is a slight chance part of that slider is caught in one of the sprockets, it feels like mechanical resistance though.
I suspect that all the rockers will have to be removed so that all valves are closed, then everything can be reset. Until then, I don't think anything can be done, as the engine is locked in that position.

Ryan, I think an extreme amount of patience is required here... you will get there. 8)
Now all that is required is a valve spring compressor to remove the rockers. ;)
The only other hurdle here is acounting for the slack in the chain, as I think that is what caused the engine to jam up in this case.

I have a 6.9 valve spring compressor but not an M117 one.

Over Xmas I was going to make a smaller foot for my 6.9 one (it's too big for a 450 motor) so that I could strip the usuable bits  ( eg hydraulic lifters) out of an old M117 motor I have but that is not much use to you at the present.

Don't try to turn the motor too much to the left - anticlockwise- it doesn't like it and that is one possible reason for odd chain slack as well as the more likely reason that one cam has jumped.

sheez im starting to think ive bitten off more than i can chew here! thanks so much for your help guys! perhaps i can get a valve spring compressor and one of u guys could come around again and help me?
