Sorry to hear that result but that wide tappet looked pretty suss.

Not even sure you'd need a new head - just a replacement valve.

But of course the head would have to come off.

You need a valve, not too expensive, plus a gasket kit - head gasket (s), inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets, plus a lot of beer for the guys who help you.  give them the beer AFTER they work on the car, not DURING.....

you make it sound so cheap!
I will gladly provide all the beer the boys can drink if they do the job!  haha

The parts aren't all that expensive, it's paying a mechanic to do the job that is. It could be done right there, in the garage, with substantial savings. ;)

its not that bad, a new valve is stuff all and all you need is gaskets, im sure us locals can all help out.

Ryan1980

i suppose i have nothing to lose really so i might as well attempt to take the head out.
I've read through the workshop manual and i need to remove exhaust manifold, power steering pump , timing chain tensioner and plastic guides (might need to borrow that pin remover tool again bill, or are they available anywhere?)

Also, in the manual it says i need a special too to remove the head bolts. Is this necessary or would a big allen key do?

I assume once these things are off the head lifts straight off?

If these 4 are on one bank (call it the good bank):

161
157
160
150

and these 4 are on the other one (call it the bad bank):

145
135
150
0

then it might be well worth removing that head, checking the pistons/rings for (unlikely) damage and get the removed head fixed.

Thats what I would do anyway.  5 of those compressions I consider good, 1 (145) I consider acceptable, 1 (135) consider low, and 0 well thats a problem.

your correct, they are all on the one bank.

WGB

All the special tools are Allen Keys but two of them are bent to clear the camshaft and manifolds..

Explanations and descriptions are all here on the Workshop manual at this site.

I do not own these "Bent " allen keys but others possibly do.

You will need a set of allen key sockets and a torque wrench.

I would seriously have a talk to the guys at "The Star Shop" in Osborne Park and find out how much they would charge instead of doing a potentially half hearted job.

Bill

Ryan1980

spoke to them - 3 to 4 grand to do the job.

just not worth it really... i paid 3000 for the car.

perhaps ill buy the tools required and give this a go myself.

any ideas where to get these 'bent' allen keys?

Ask the how much to just reco the head if you removed it and delivered it to them, also make sure the include all the new gaskets required for re-assembly.

The bent alley key isn't super expensive: Click here

It's probably a lot cheaper to find a complete motor on eBay or local wrecker and drop that in.

Yes, but these are M117 986 motors,with K-Jet rather than D-Jet. ;)
I think, given the work that was done on Ryan's engine, it would be better in the long run to persevere with the existing engine.
