Title: Headlight flasher
Post by: Randys01 on 20 August 2020, 07:50 PM

On the matter of the column stalk combo switch.
Can any one please confirm the operation of the headlight flasher? That is....will it operate without ignition and headlight switch on?
Or will it only operate with  ignition?
Or only operate with lights on and ignition?
I have having a terrible time trying to figure mine out. I have tried every combo  and tracked the circuitry up hill down dale......it does everything ..but work?
After 10 manhours the only thing that would make sense is that there is a relay in the flasher circuit only and it is defunct. But having waded thru the crummy circuit diagram and exploring the car, I cannot see that  a relay is used.

Thus.  Does anybody know for a fact that no relays are used in the lighting circuit inc the flasher function. ?  ???
tks

Hello,

Sorry I cannot answer your question rapidly. I store some of the classics at another location and rotate these every two weeks.  As soon as I pick-up the 6.9 again I will answer the first part of your question.

Best regards,

The high-beam flash operates at any time.
I'll check the circuit diagram I have to see if there's a relay.

Thank you for your trouble. I have made some headway having traced 3 separate wiring diagram variants.
{nigh impossible to interpret due to shrunk photocopies of photocopies ]
However, I am satisfied I have the precise circuit isolated.
I cannot find a relay in any of it.

After hours of frustrating in car diagnosis, I have removed the switch and wiring from the car and set up a bench test rig as the finger of blame is now determined to be in the switch itself.
Whilst this may seem the first and obvious thing let me tell you it's a night mare proving it!
This has led to dismantling the switch . OMG!...micro springs/clips  as used in watches....jumping everywhere.!

As at 8pm last night I have identified the constant power supply lug /wire that powers the function: the question now is do we have a mechanical issue in the contacts mechanism which is not allowing the current to flow to the lights.? This is work in progress..........

I can't believe what  a freaking big deal this seemingly humble issue turned into. It's my first real foray into the electrics of this car and I have been hampered by one thing or the other every inch of the way..hours and hours of research and hanging upside down under the dash.

Ordinarily you'd be pretty sure it's the switch and buy another ($60  on any other car}and just swap it out. . Well RHD combo switches with provision for Cruise control appear to be unicorn horn powder.
There are lhd variants avail used and new but rhd?.and a King's ransom new if it exists.

Hence I've really had to do everything to diagnose and repair what I have accepting the switch was never intended to be a serviceable item.
....just getting the loom and connector plug back down the steering column sheath is going to be a challenge. There's  no room as the additional wiring loom for the cruise control is a real impediment.

If I ever get it fixed..get it back together.. and back into the car and it works?.....I'll bake a cake!
This is a real "pig in a poke" kinda project. :'(
