Title: Gas tank — Gas to Diesel
Post by: Delibes on 20 August 2014, 03:45 AM
Anyone have experience swapping a (larger) gasoline fuel tank (450SEL, 350SEL, 280SE) to a diesel 300SD W116? Are any modifications needed, or is it bolt on? Anything to do to the fuel lines? How about tank filter location, mesh and size?

Cheers and thank you in advance!

I'm swapping mine. I'm fairly certain it's just bolt in but I will have a look at my tanks and update.

The two tanks are a direct bolt in.  However, there are three things that have to be changed.

1) Fuel gauge sending unit.  They are not the same between the large and small tank.  The fuel gauge will never read accurately.

2) Fuel gauge in instrument cluster.  The gauges are calibrated to match the sending unit.

3) Tank screen.  The diesel and gas tank screens are different.  The gas version has a finer mesh screen than the diesel does.
