Title: Fuel System Refresh
Post by: gurrier on 19 February 2022, 10:25 AM
Hello all,

I have removed the petrol tank and will give it Por15 three stage process to seal.

Mine is DJet so has 05804664005 Bosch Pump.   There is a NOS example for sale.

I can of course order the A0020919701 Bosch replacement at the same time that I order a new filter.

Anyone have a view on if the NOS part is still serviceable bearing in mind that I do not know its production date.  I would suspect that the seals within might have deteriorated even though they have never come into contact with fuel.  Is there any down side to having the newer pump fitted with regard to fuel pressure generated?

One of the advantages of an old car is obviously you can in many instances dismantle parts to carry out repair. In the interest of sustainability I decided to look at my Fuel Sender Unit.

(I digress somewhat but watching a Youtube video from 'woodsandbarclay' even through it refers to a 1982 W123 240D, I saw therein how to dismantle the Fuel Sender Unit-also shown attention to door striker plates, Radio Antenna etc. - a one stop shop)...
Back on topic to the Fuel Sender Unit. Needs some work as you can see.  The special tool shown for loosening the nut on base in NLA.

Is yours a "short" or "lang" fuel pump.  I know the short can easily be refurbished with an available kit.

OT, but how did you manage to insert the image on the new platform?

Hi rumb,

Mine appears shorter than others I have seen (perhaps I should rephrase that)   Would you be able to say in reference to the filter which it is.

I was going on what Kent B. said that it was unlikely to be possible to successfully reseal the larger section of the pump because of the un/crimping necessary on the housing being difficult to get right.

Clicked on the icon beside YouTube Icon having first uploaded image to my drop box and then insert the link.

I have not seen a pump like that. Others should know what it is.

All D-Jetronic cars had this same fuel pump until it's end in 1975.  It's not anything unusual or rare, but no longer available new for the last 10-13 years.  There is a place in CA called Fuel Injection Corp. that can rebuild this pump.

Aaron, to your knowledge is there anything special about those djet pumps that would make a kjet pump an unsuitable replacement?

Thanks UTn_boy and ptashek. Input is appreciated. If my research is correct it appears that Djet operated at a much lower pressure than subsequent iterations. What I am trying to establish is if the NOS one available at present would be a better choice than a Mercedes supplied replacement currently offered. In essence if the original - possibly minimum 10-13 years old - is preferable to a genuine dealer supplied substitute which might just only be a 'make do' replacement - or am I just second guessing.

The Mercedes replacement is actually an early K-Jet pump.  It works fine, but a lot of fabrication has to be done to make it work, and then it looks like a 1st grader installed the pump.  Later K-Jet pumps put out too much, and can damage the now unobtainable D-Jet pressure regulator and damper.

Here is a link to a new D-Jet pump. The 1979-1983 Datsun 200SX and 280ZX use the same pump as the D-Jet Mercedes.  It's more expensive than the K-jet replacement, but is plug an play with no modification.  Thankfully, Nissan is still making these pumps. https://www.ebay.com/itm/201370385663 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/201370385663).  It all comes down to whether you want to do it right, or just get along with what will move fuel.

UTn_boy,

I have seldom had such a concise answer to any query that I have raised in any sphere - truly there is a significant benefit in membership of this forum.
Doing it right is the option that I will be taking.
Thanks again,

Bill

Hi UTn_boy,

Oops, just came across your post of the 26th July 2021 in response to the Fuel Pump replacement 450SLC thread.
Reading my way slowly through the site-the patience from long standing forum members in replying to repeated questions is much appreciated.
