I think the warning light is red on early cars, orange on later cars

My '79 280SEL's light is red I'm pretty sure....

Is it possible there could be a variation?

Andrew: Anything is possible - including the possibility that your gauge is not original or correct period.

My 116s:
1979 - amber reserve lamp / amber headlamp knob lamp
1978 - amber reserve lamp / amber headlamp knob lamp
1973 (Crayford) red reserve lamp / green headlamp knob lamp.
