Exhaust system replace
« on: 05 February 2021, 04:55 PM »
Well, it's exhaust system time for old Blue.

I decided long ago that I would work towards the Standard model - my first 280SE was gray market with the Standard OEM exhaust system. When it got crunched I removed it. When I got my newest 116, I replaced the cobbled together Calif mess with what the man had in mind. This original system has lasted a long time, more patches than original. Then it just fell off.
I’m looking for ideas, possibly consensus. I’d like to stick with Mercedes for the manufacturer, so far about the best seems to be around $700 for both.

I can highly recommend Timevalve, they are the go to guys for Benz exhausts in my opinion.   They shipped me a set of 6.9 downpipes all the way to Canada no problem. Fit perfectly.

What Daniel said.  I too used Timevalve, though fit wasn't quite perfect, at least not perfect enough for me do it myself.  Get the kit and take it to a custom muffler shop for installation.  It won't be much $$$ and they can easily deal with anything that comes up.  I think Daniel gave me this advice - and he was right!  Cheers,

Mercedes original exhausts are excellent and last a very long time. The rear section on my 6.9 has been there since 1990. Expensive though.

Went with Timevalve too.  The muffler shop had to do a little nip and tuck, but nothing major.  They are backed up a little though, so it might be a couple months.  Was about $1000.  Totally worth it.

It is also exhaust time for me. Mine has been a work in progress for the 5 years I have had the vehicle.  Ive patched and sealed a s much as I can but its time to now replace.  Lasts season pulling onto my four post lift the exhaust was hanging a touch low and snagged on the cross beam.  It s now really hanging and time to replace.

Ive also been trying to decide between timevalve or a local custom shop.

It would be really nice to order from timevalve and be able to swap it out myself with a little welding to the exhaust manifolds but it doesn't sound like it is that easy.  I plan on getting rid of the cats (not required in michigan) and cleaning up the underbody a little while the exhaust is off.

stupid question: if I was to remove the entire exhaust so that I can clean up the underbody, would there be any harm driving for 20 miles or so with no exhaust to the local custom shop? Other than the obnoxious noise is the lack of back pressure on the engine at all harmful?

thanks

I wondered exactly the same thing and decided not to risk it.  The manifold is kind of mid-height in the engine bay and so steering gear and other stuff might be subjected to far higher temperatures than with the downpipes in place.  My solution was to kind of get the new system more or less positioned in place though not properly aligned and tightened.  The drive to the shop was loud but I wasn't worried about  cooking anything.  cheers,
-Dave

My Timevalve was a wrestling match.  Two visits until it was leak proof and rattle-free.

I just did my 450SE from Timevalve, I wonder if it's the 280SE model that they're having a problem with?

German ebay had a manufacturer of 280 exhausts. Apparently a good market there.
