exhaust query

Does anybody know why  some sections of the exhaust on the w116 were changed in 1978? :-\

I believe pollution controls were added around that time and the exhaust changes were made to accomodate the them or to reduce the performance decrease caused by the pollution controls.

I have a 1977 280se and I have occasional trouble with smoke coming off an (I suppose) overheated exhaust in the section after the manifold before it ducks under the firewall. This isn't a common problem is it?
