Exhaust

About to fit a new exhaust and looking at the parts illustrations I see that the hangers have a flat slotted plate between the pipe and the hanger. There were none on the old exhaust. Anyone ever used these and what are they made of?

I believe you are refering the insulating gasket made from some kind of organic material. They degrade over time and your may heve just lost yours. This goes along with a metal part that facilitates the insulator.

Yes can't say I have noticed it before looking at the parts books. Quite a complicated arrangement and with all the bump stops. Tend to take them for granted really until they fail that is. Any tips on installing the exhaust? Going to be a bit impractical as there is only me.

I'd assemble the entire exhaust system on the ground, slide under car and using several jacks and stands  lift it up into place. Attach to exhaust manifold and continue using jacks to push up near attachment points. Get one rubber donut on and using a large flat blade screwdriver pull the second donut on. Some of the mounts pre-attach loosely to pipes and adjust to where you can bolt or nut them on in their locations.

The round rubber bump stops can be hard to get into their hole, I push a phillips head screwdriver in the middle hole and push as that stretched it out enough to get the plug end into the hole.  Some sort of soapy or lubricating on the plug helps.

Anyone got any tips on separating the downpipes from the manifold? Can't budge them. If I can't I  will have to take the steering box out to get pipe and manifold out.

Never had that problem......yet.

Other than removing all the bolts, perhaps soak in penetrating spray and next try a bit of blue tip wrench and tap side with hammer.

Part list should include new copper nuts for those bolts.  There is actually some sort of tool that swedges them in, but I found not entirely necessary.

Its been a while.

I replaced my exhaust on the 6.9 this past week.  Timevalve stainless. It was an excellent fit.  I have a lift and I installed it from the front back.  Started at the exhaust manifolds and pieced it together going backwards. Just loosely put the exhaust to manifold screws in and didn't tighten them until all was assembled. I used a tall jack stand to hold up the longer segments while I secured each one with the rubber hangers.

The hardest part was removing the old exhaust from the manifold (and it wasn't that hard).  I am in the rust belt so there was no way they were coming off intact.  I used a reciprocating saw to cut through two of the bolts that were easily accessible. I could not reach the other two with a saw so I snapped them off with my torque wrench and used a punch to push the remaining studs out of the manifold.  Very quick and easy.  Didn't even have to fire up the torch.

I did it all alone so it is very do-able but I would not want to do it on my back so hopefully you have access to a lift?

No access to a lift although the car is currently on stands but still very low for the work. Decided to give up on getting the down pipes off and will fit the new stainless exhaust to them. Less work. I am left though with a brand new unused Mercedes rear box. Did want to put an original exhaust on and was buying it section by section but then Mercedes stopped selling them. Anyway decided to go all stainless and put the MB rear box on the shelf. Don't suppose any one will want it.

I feel your pain.  I buggered around with mine on jack stands too. Ended up taking it to a shop.  Some jobbies are simply best left to the pros

As a side to this post, I had a full stainless system fitted in 1993(?) or there about.
Not the engine pipe of course.
Still there trouble free, and I never think about it.
The only part of grievance is the "Y" piece attached to the manifold section.  Its been welded on the split about every 3 years without exception.

The exhaust is made and I am working up to trying to fit it. Not much choice really as the car has had no exhaust fitted for some time. Been looking for someone to make ever since MB stopped selling them. They all said they needed the car or the old exhaust which of course I had scrapped without thinking that I would need it. Well I have the new one now finally and with some more hard work I might get the car on the road.
