Also, try carandclassic.co.uk

There's plenty of euro folk specialised in importing US cars there.

...especially as it's actually a Euro model, so no Federal bumpers and lights to remove (they're not popular in Europe).

Those of you that are talking this car up......would you, yourselves,  really pay over 10K for this fellas 6.9?  (no offense to the seller) Too often do I see W116 owners trying to verbally increase the value of their cars and others, yet when it comes time to buy one, they chicken out and offer peanuts for the car, but after they own it, it's automatically worth tens of thousands of dollars again.

Over the summer, a close friend of mine sold his 6.9 that he had completed a restoration on.....a thorough restoration....nuts, bolts, underneath, inside and out, etc.  It was black with anthracite velour, Euro model, an absolutely stunning car.  He only got 15k out of it.  The price you saw the auction end at for your car is probably the most you're going to see stateside. If you want more, then follow Lukas's advice and advertise in Europe.

A W116 in the U.S. is still "the fat girl at the dance".  They're like an R107, a in they're an acquired taste, and U.S. culture and preferences likely won't allow for W116 chassis to catch on any time soon.

im not talking the car up but here in Australia, with a similar mentality being 116s have been unloved, values are definitely lifting a lot in the last 1-2 years.  the car is worth what someone will pay.  In the US maybe there are more good original cars, but here in Australia this is not the case and excellent low km 6.9s are now pulling in 50k (40k US at moment, 50k last year!).  A restored car is never as good as an original, period. As PT said, someone probably got a good deal with your mates car though.  sadly non 6.9 116s are not likely to hit the big time in the future, but 6.9s just as 6.3s have, will be asking big money in a few years i think.
my 2c from someone who has watched local 6.9 prices for the last 20 years.

Even though I don't dispute most of what you say, there may be a different factor, when it comes to W116 and "originals"
Cars  like the the MB's from the 6.3 and W116 era are built to pretty modern specs. Those are cars you can/would drive daily, on highways even. Most cars from before that era are not. If you're gonna collect cars that are unspoiled originals, I would think you would not make those daily drivers, and maybe not even weekend drivers of the long-distance sort. Maybe pre-65 originals are ready for museums and long-term storage.
I would not want to rake up the miles if I owned an "original" car, for I'd end up with a car that needs repairs, maintenance, a car that would end up needing a paint job eventually.
I would not be looking for an original, low-mileage 6.9, even though it sounds really romantic. I would want to buy a 6.9 that has seen the most professional/elaborate of restorations, allowing for years of weekend-driving without fear of rot and break-down, trying to find NLA parts, tinkering till kingdom come.

I did sell the car guys and it went to Poland. All of the interest was from Europe. I sold for a relatively low number but all things considered I was fine with that. It really was a great car to restore but it still needed a lot of attention that I could not give it at the moment. It could be a $40k car with some effort though as I believe it was a true low mileage car.

Nice one. Money in the pocket is all that matters in the end.
