Yes, NLA. They've ran out of stock mid-last year.
The full assembly is NLA too. Only the star emblem, star assembly and seal are still available from that kit.

Post by: floyd111 on 06 November 2015, 09:12 AM
Well, for 35 bucks each, I am not taking the chance. Just bought both of them myself., haha. Wouldn't be the first time my suppliers are listing items that MB can't actually supply.

What's you take on the front and rear windows? (double compound, heat absorbing, with defroster.)
NLA or not? I am still getting "available" listings.

Post by: s class on 06 November 2015, 09:25 AM
I just ordered a couple of grille crates for myself via my usual dealer.  No problem on supply.  Price to me is about what I would have paid to get those ebay ones when considering the shipping and tax costs that would have to be added.

Maybe your source has some in stock, or maybe they've re-appeared (wouldn't be a first).

Same as usual. You won't know for sure until your source confirms stock with Germany, or happens to have local stock.
But second hand supply is pretty steady, so no worries there. Do you really need to change the glass though?
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: floyd111 on 06 November 2015, 05:13 PM
I'd rather not, for sure, but one of the cars has had a rear shield replacement, made in Taiwan. It seems OK to the untrained eye, but to me it's shade of green is too light. Also, no defroster lines. Also, not compound glass, probably not heat absorbing.
The other worries I have are the front windows.  I need to take 3 such windows out of 3 cars. What are the chances of a break? 1 in 3?
After that I need to have the polishing-guy come in and find out if there are scratches he can't fix.
All of this will be taking place in the next few weeks. Needless to say I am worried. It's not even sure anyone in Taiwan is willing to take those windows out for me, lest at my own risk.
Now, replacing/buying windows is a matter of (a lot) of money, which is no fun, but I also worry about the chrome window trim. I told the garage that if windows are found to be scratched beyond repair, then just put a brick through them instead of prying them out, and ensure saving the trim.
Honestly, what do you think? Would a company like Car-Glass, people that come to your home and fix car windows on-site, would they have issues getting a W123/W116 window +trim out without much trouble?

I know there's cheaper aftermarkets, but this Behr is 3x cheaper than the list price from MB! (if you have a V8..)

I've taken the front and back glass out of my 350 with a helper, without any damage. Can't see why people who do this for a living would have issues.
It's dead easy once you cut away the old seals around the chrome trim. Give it a slight, but steady push, and the glass comes out nicely.

The price is a little high considering its a fake that only approximately looks like an AMG spoiler.  Real AMG front spoilers are very rare, and usually fetch 500- or more.

Low mileage and few owners don't replace regular maintenance, and good substance.
If it was parked outside for many years (last registered in 1991), and only recently dry stored, you can expect it to be a proper rust bucket.
Also, it's a very low-spec, all manual 280SE. Only the gearbox works in its favour. A good parts car for well under 1000EUR, maybe.
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: UTn_boy on 24 February 2016, 08:21 PM
660,000 km isn't low mileage, (372,822 miles)  it's not a complete car, and it shows signs of many hidden problems.  Even if it were a low mileage car it still looks like it has nearly half a million miles in it.   Notice the rear floor carpets are darker.....that's probably because they're wet or used to get wet often.  That coupled with what PTASHEK has already stated, and you have a car worth it's weight in scrap or a little more.

I realize that W116 cars in the U.S. are very inexpensive to buy compared to other markets, and often times people will give them away because they're such a hard model to sell.  However, i think value based on condition is a worldwide understanding among enthusiasts regardless of current regional values.  In this particular case, the pictures themselves tell the whole story.

I doubt the M110 would survive that kind of mileage.

How does such a purchase hold up against originality of the original car?
Datacard would have a different engine-number listed, no?
What are your thoughts here?
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: daantjie on 03 March 2016, 10:01 PM
Only if you have to have a "numbers matching" car. To me this is a cool thing to have to keep if your engine says bye-bye but not worth what they are seeking I'm sure. The 6.9 engine is uber tough and will keep running with marginal TLC.  You have a much higher chance of frying a transmission.
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: Jed on 03 March 2016, 11:14 PM
I am usually all about originality, having said that I think that engine is gorgeous. I would love to have it in the corner of my garage as a show piece and backup engine. I would not pay anywhere near what they are asking simply because I don't NEED it. It is probably worth it frankly, just not to me. If I needed a replacement engine I would have no concern about swapping it in and no longer being numbers matching.

By the way, I don't see a smog pump....does that mean its a high compression euro?

Factory rebuilt 6.9 engine. Nice pictures.  Wish I could get my engine that clean.

Relatively speaking, the starting bid seems like a pretty decent price. I wonder what the reserve is though.
For comparison, a fully rebuilt M117.968  (from a W126 560) can be got, without auxiliaries, for around 9000EUR in Germany.

The right-most is definitely the ignition sequence and timing setup one.
Like the one you've linked (maybe not the exact same, as Stan pointed out).
Available from MB, and quite cheap too.

Can't say what the other one is, doesn't look familiar.

V8 M116/M117 "Indicating Plate".
A1175842121

It's a bizarre part - the EPC doesn't list it at all, when searching for all parts for the M117/M100/116032/116036 subgroups, yet you can buy it:
http://www.online-teile.com/mercedes-ersatzteile/A1175842121_Indicating-Plate.html (I've bought mine 09/2015, and the part number matches)

Can't say if the 6.9 has the same sticker or not (probably not).

1980 SD with euro bumpers, euro lights, ACC2 and hupcaps in California.

Shouldn't all US diesels have US bumpers as well as US lights? And where did the hupcaps come from? My only thought is that someone tried to make the best of everything with this car. It looks pretty damn OEM.

There was a thread on the weasto heater, but I can't seem to find it. What exactly does this item do? Any use on a diesel?
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: floyd111 on 03 April 2016, 11:25 PM
Correct me if I made any mistakes here;
The Webasto's are stand-alone heaters, autonomous systems that run on the fuel in the fuel tank, but do not require the car's engine to run. It has it's own fuel pump that draws only a little energy from the car's battery.
Great for those days when you are stuck in the snow and need to spend the night in the car, waiting to be rescued, haha!

There are models that run on gasoline, and others that run on diesel.
The diesel ones are still popular, and are widely available, new and used.
I know of a brand new diesel system that was on offer on eBay Kleinanzeigen, only 2 months ago, a model that was supposed to be installed in an Unimog. Think it was 300 euros..
Here's today's link for webasto's there:
https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-autoteile-reifen/ersatz_reparaturteile/webasto/k0c223+autoteile_reifen.art_s:ersatz_reparaturteile

I have not yet seen a diesel Webasto for W116-specific, but that is probably a coincidence.

They are, but for newer models they're made by Eberspächer not Webasto.
We have a W210 2.9TDI in the family, and it has one of those units. It also pre-heats the engine block.

If you ever wanted the "tabellenbuch", there's the very last edition (January 1981) that covers W116, on German eBay. It is largely identical to the January 1980 edition, but is especially handy if you also have an early W126 in your stable: http://www.ebay.de/itm/301909452438

A sane price for these is around 40-45EUR in good condition, so get negotiating ;)

p.s.: I've no connection to seller.

For tax/customs purposes the country of the last significant manufacturing operation is regarded as the country of origin of the final product.
If you have 10 bulbs made in India, one box made in China, and it's all assembled into a final product in Germany, including adding branding and some external packaging - the country of origin would be Germany. The product may contain a list of all individual countries of origin though. It's messed up :)

That is a bucket of cash! I don't see the need. A nice, complete set is not that rare, but it's easy to overspend on a mediocre kit.
If you want the best..in a few months, I'll have an overcomplete brand new set available, unique in the sense that it is in Matador-only, That should cost less than half of that ebay item. Only 1 like that.
After that, I'll have 2 more complete sets available for the forum guys here, that are 4 star perfect, for a quarter of that ebay price. It all goes at cost, so it need not be costly.

That's not an oil pump, but an oil pressure damper. You can fix an existing one for 15EUR with OEM parts (new membrane) and then glass bead clean the rest for far less than the asked for 125EUR. At that price it's hardly a bargain at all - at half that, maybe.

Those are in fact W116 door panels. I think they may have only been for stripper Euro models and I've seen one really poor condition set in a yard before. Our very own Squiggle Dog had a set of them for sale a number of years ago over on Peachparts :http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/2214276-post1.html (http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/2214276-post1.html)

Wasn't that a 6.9 specific feature, to go along with the suspension?

I may be wrong here, but I think it was more common on R107's.
They are used on W126 also

It was just an option. One of my low-spec 280's also has it. Problem is I never knew, till it was too late, and I had already stocked up on regular NOS head lights. Can't be buying yet a pair of vacuums at this point. _ or I would have grabbed this one.

[/quote]

6.9 cars weren't offered vacuum assisted headlights because of the hydraulic suspension......or any W116/R107/W126 that had hydraulic suspension or rear leveling.  Why?  because it would have been redundant.  The vacuum assisted headlights were in place to compensate for sag in the rear of the car when loaded.  Since cars with hydraulic suspension and/or self leveling in the rear automatically corrected their ride height when loaded down, having to adjust the headlights wasn't necessary.  Granted, none of this is to say that someone couldn't have installed vacuum assisted light leveling on a 6.9 or the like, or even specifically requested it when ordering the car new,  but my point was to bring to light that the 6.9 isn't supposed to have the vacuum assisted lighting.  On;y spring suspended cars were offered the option.

My late '76/early '77 6.9 is a euro, and has the lower rev limit.

The changed rev limit might be linked to the change in piston design that occured during production.  One thing I can say, is my early car is FAST.

I don't think a Grand Prix Cassette came available until after the W116 ceased production.  (pinstripe models)  Rumb, there are several Grand Prix models for sale on ebay, Chrome London's website, and I'd imagine that Becker Auto Sound here in the U.S. has some on the shelf ready to go, but their prices are too high, and you'll have to send it back 4-5 times after you buy it to get it to work right.  Such is life, I suppose.

Hard lines Robert, I think once you do one day land this elusive chin spoiler we need to celebrate ;D  I think this part must have gotten smashed up quite a bit due to it's placement on the car that is why all stock has been depleted.  Still think a mould could be made but will be pricey and demand may be limited.

Looks like a rare combination for sure. And ABS, ACC and (beat up) velour seats! 506K kms, not too shabby!
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: floyd111 on 08 January 2017, 07:09 PM
Saw that ad a week ago. If the velours had been without large holes, it would have been one to watch. However, the back seat is gone for sure. The (honest) seller shows a picture of the holes in the floor, representative of the other yet hidden holes and rot that will be. If you add to that the mess that is the engine bay, you're left with the (maybe functioning)ABS and the column shifter in a car that probably still needs all the normal repairs and doesn't stand out besides being an SEL.
Still, if one would be looking for a restoration object, if bought cheaply, it would have made for an interesting starter.
It'st 3500.. I would have walked away 1000 euros ago, already on a new hunt for another column shifter for sale.

Luke, I think it's a 2ng generation late dash, as there is no ridge in the middle of the wood panels.  I make mention of this because the 1st gen early dash wood is not interchangeable with the 1st gen late dash wood, and vice versa.  The profile behind the wood in the actual dash is different between 1st gen early and late.

Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: tcj on 08 February 2017, 08:45 AM
no, its a first-gen-dash. You can see it because the speakers are mounted below the wood panels.
And only some early dashs do have the ridge (my car with early dash also had no ridge).
Maybe only very early cars do have the ridge, or only the 280?

Mounting an late dash in early cars is no big problem - I have done it. There are only small
differences in the mounting of the handbrake knob (LHD-car). I just reused these parts of my
old early dash in the new late dash and it works.

Be cautious of this seller.  A lot of their parts are marked up higher than retail, and they claim everything they have listed is rare and no longer available, when, in fact, a lot of the pieces are still available.  I've also tried working with the seller(s) in making very reasonable offers for various parts only to be met with hostility and name calling.  They're not really worthy of any consideration.

For 35 bucks it's really worth buying it, whilst awaiting the others to pop up. I saw it's big brother on offer on ebay Klein as well, but have been unable to find it back at the moment. It was even cheaper, and I guess it will return again in a bit. They been trying to sell it for over a year.

Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: UTn_boy on 06 March 2017, 01:49 PM
The M-110 engines used an R-210.  I'm sure this would work, but may not take as much refrigerant as the system originally called for.  Remember, all of the nomenclature means something.  In "R-210", the "R" means that the compressor has suction on the right side, the "2" means it's a 2 cylinder, and the "10" means it's displacement is 10 cubic inches.  The biggest thing to make sure of is that the suction and discharge ports are on the correct side.

This particular compressor has flange type fittings on top in which a hose connects sideways to.  The m-110 compressors have O-ring type fittings in which the A/C lines connect from the top.  Obviously, fitment of the lines will not be what it's supposed to be, and not possible unless additional 90 degree fittings are found.

No, Jed.  The flange type fittings bolt to the head of the compressor, and the Tube-O, or O-ring type, fittings that our M-110 engines use are made into the head of the compressor itself.  Cylinder heads aren't interchangeable, either, as the reed valve plates are different.

Jed and Stan, thank you for the kind words, but I won't fly, and real estate is cheap here in Knoxville...often with lots of land, too!  ;)

Post by: UTn_boy on 08 March 2017, 05:13 PM
Ah ok.  I see what you're asking.  As long as they're both flange types, then yes. Though, the M-189 also used 210, not a 209. Let us know if it fits ok.  I'll be curious.

UTn_boy

I was able to remove the flange fittings from my 67 300sel which have screw on hose connectors and move them over to the new compressor which had flange fittings with smooth hose connectors (that I imagine you would simply clamp a hose on).  The gaskets were a little different but from whatI can tell it should seal fine.  Time will tell when I take it to get charged.  Both compressors BTW were 209.  Now I need to get a new AC drier and maybe an expansion valve??

I attached a couple pics of my old compressor. Looks like one of the two connecting rods failed and blew a hole out of the side of the case.  All the debris APPEARS to remain in the lower half of the compressor body and not above the two pistons which are still intact and hopefully not in the hoses/system.

Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: UTn_boy on 20 March 2017, 02:15 AM
The first thing I'd do is flush the evaporator, condenser, lines, and make sure that the screen in the expansion valve isn't clogged.  Catastrophic failures like this merit such actions.  Just because the large debris remained in the bottom doesn't mean that small particulate debris didn't enter the rest of the system.

If you buy a new expansion valve, it'll be calibrated for R-134A.  If you're using R-134A that's fine, just don't expect any temperatures below 50-60 degrees F out of the vents.  On hotter and more humid days, it'll be even worse.  However, if you're using R-12, then try to use your old expansion valve.  They can be taken apart and cleaned.  Regarding the 209 compressor, it seems someone may have replaced it in the past, as they were supposed to have 210 from new.  The 209 will work just fine.  Just remember to put a little less refrigerant in  when you charge it.  :)

Many Germans won't even ship outside the country, or accept payment via PayPal; some accept wire transfers. I've been buying there for at least 20 years now, and I still don't understand why it's this way. Germany still has a largely cash-based retail economy, which may be a factor here.

I had much better success buying from private individuals on eBay Kleinenzeigen, then from professional sellers on eBay proper.

easy to understand:
When shipping packages to outside the EU you have to declare the contents, find out Customs Tariff Numbers
for every part. Its time consuming and not a pleasure to send out packages into the world.
And doing this for the first time makes a lot of headaches.

paypal: just received a payment of 350€ from Australia (sold some W112-parts). Paypal took 19€
out of this envelope. Any questions?
Wiring money within europe costs: 0€

Those rules apply to commercial shipments, sent via Cargo companies, and they are a real drag indeed.
However, no such hassle when private people send stuff via mail or courier, and also no such hassle if companies send small shipments via mail or courier.
As long as you are not asking to have VAT minussed, it should be smooth sailing.

I can't single out German suppliers, big or small, for any other reasons but the fact that I buy a lot from Germany, and therefore will bump into German simpletons once in a while.
Could say the same about the USA, where -also- one in 10 people won't ship abroad.

Yeah, that one's funny :)
I've always wondered why they call it an "oil pump" in the EPC, even though it's a simple float in an air chamber, with a membrane on top of it.

I've pinged the seller about that Vickers pump. If indeed NOS, it's a steal at 50EUR. We'll see if I get a good feeling about them before committing.

Those bumpers are correct for a US spec 6.9.

The 'fasten belts' icon, charcoal canister and wider radiator without oil cooler are also characteristic of a US spec 6.9.

The 85mph speedo was correct for some model years, can't remember which.  THe US members should be able to clarify.

All in all, it looks to be a tidy US spec car thats had euro spec lights fitted, which is a fairly common/popular mod.

My 300SD has the same black bumpers. They were removed from a USA spec 6.9. The 85 MPH speedometer (which mine also has) is supposed to be a 1980 model year thing. I'm not sure what it's doing on a 1979 6.9 unless it was made late in the year. It's nice that this one has front and rear seat heaters.

exactly the 85mph is from a 300sd the 6.9 speedo should be 160? its been changed and mileage is probably incorrect.
nice looking car though

No, the late 6.9s had 85mph speedos.

Was that the full range on the speedo? Is there some back story to that?
It seems bizarre that a car capable of 145mph would have a speedo calibrated to 85mph.
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: s class on 30 May 2017, 08:26 AM
It was federal law to have 85mph speedos.

Check here :
http://www.classic-car-history.com/85-mph-speedo.htm (http://www.classic-car-history.com/85-mph-speedo.htm)

"In September of 1979, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) passed a bill which stated that all car, pickup truck and motorcycle speedometers were to display a maximum speed of 85 miles-per-hour. This federal regulation also required speedometers to have a special emphasis on the number 55 (the national speed limit at the time)."

For collectors.. The 1958-1968 comb and compact set in original packing.
I just bought the one Rumb suggested in the US for 100usd.

This one here is buried inside ebay.co.uk, and it was 5 pounds when I found it.
Only 1 bidder +plus me, and he has gone to 43 pounds (invisibly) before giving up.
It's 8 pounds (visibly) but ignore that.

Couple a weeks ago there was a guy selling for 400usd, and the one I bought was offered for 225usd (at first.)
So, for now, this one here is by far the best offer.

Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: floyd111 on 03 June 2017, 09:57 PM
but, on that note.. Another item in this very same series, a little box with 6 very tiny plastic cars went for 410 euros last week. It was an online bidding massacre where I stood in disbelief, with me bidding a rather insane 200 euros halfway, and seeing it racing past 400 in no time..

Also, if you look at the little boxed 280SL in that same series on my W116 thread, if ever they pop up, bidding starts at 350 euros, and always ends up selling 4-500 euros.

The comb/compact set I described went cheap, and it was thanks to very poor advertising and the fact it was set to show UK-only in searches, or it would never have gone under 100 pounds.
btw.. any bidder besides the present winner would have paid a minimum of 43 pounds, coz that's where I pulled out, looking to avoid a further bidding war for an item I already had.
The seller clearly did not know front from back.

You're not entirely off, though, Stan.  Back in the 1980's there was a short period in time Mercedes offered these key fobs in various colors to match the interior of the car.  Like you, I've never seen parchment, but I have seen black, blue, dark red, dark olive green, palomino, and brown.  They never lasted as long as they should have..

Would be interesting to find out how good a fit they are.
I am surely gonna drop by that factory soon, and find out what else they have for W116

The motometer tire pressure gauge was a separately available accessory, and did not come with the tool kit.  The darker colored tools are from a much earlier model.  So no, the kits never came with all of what is in this one.

Ugh, getting 80% of search results that have nothing to do with the W116 (such as page after page of identical universal wheels, car covers, fuel pumps, etc.) along with not having money put me off of browsing eBay. Years ago I used to spend a few minutes a day browsing my W116 search parameters checking newly listed items. Then it got to the point where it would take hours and I wouldn't even get through a day's worth of listings. I'm going to have to add -wheels, -car cover, etc. to my already long search parameters so this twaddle stops showing up and clogging up my searches. I don't need to see eight pages of generic fuel pumps that don't fit my car.

Now that I look at it, maybe the bracket that goes on the body just under the fuel tank is differently-shaped so the sphere will fit. But, that doesn't matter to me as I already have two of these brackets now. I wonder what the shipping to the USA would cost--probably more than I can afford at this time. One thing you never see for sale with these, is the plastic trim that covers up the wire harness in the trunk. I have some, but they are broken and missing pieces.

Yes, it's the full range.. small-minded villagers who have never set foot abroad, and metropolitan people that speak 4 languages on ebay.
That part you gotta try.
What would be the weight of that set? Would you need to ship every part of it, or could you replace a few beams locally, to save weight on shipping?

I don't have any idea how much that would weigh. I have the "light" parts, and need the "heavy" ones.  I'd want pretty much everything, though I'd find some way to replace the ball with a receiver. The seller seems friendly enough and speaks English, but thinks the shipping will be expensive, though that's a relative term. I don't really have a way of gauging the cost, and not sure if he wants to estimate the size and weight to see about how much it would be. $100 shipping I could probably do. $300, not so much, though if I had a decent income, I'd just pay it.

Actually, it looks like there are quite a few "W116 anhängerkupplung" for sale in Germany, and at reasonable prices. I suppose it's just finding a seller who doesn't mind getting me a shipping estimate.

Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: floyd111 on 27 July 2018, 09:47 AM
Don't tempt me.. We're about to start building a low-budget futuristic home on a mountain top this year. Naturally, I already have visions of a 70's man-cave MB showroom with my car in my cave.. Problem is that it's a house on stilts, with a agricultural net house as a first floor, and absolutely no space or budgets for caves anywhere, haha! That table would have done real nice, though. I'll keep the photo instead. Maybe have it built here one day. Big furniture factories everywhere here, and you can walk in anywhere with a custom request. No extra charge. Just another table. You can order Rolf Benz knockoffs anywhere. The original Benz brochures are piled up on the table.  Better leather the the original if you'd wish it to be...still not cheap, but 3 times less then the original Benz retail. Thought about those as well, but I will go for the toddler-and-cat-proof farmer settee instead, I guess.

They're Italian made Eta Beta's, cheap 7Jx15H2 Penta knock-offs. Can be had for half that in usable condition. They have a German ABE, so at least should be safe to use, and are approved for all W116s.

Was that the same box that was for sale for 3000 usd a couple of months ago? Saw it, and walked away. Would have grabbed it at 925, but who would have guessed such a price drop was possible?

Hi,

no, was not the same box as the $3000 box. (do you have a link?)

The 925€ and the 5800€-box are the same.

They're not chrome plated.  They're just polished aluminum.  Take note of the areas they couldn't get to...they're still unpolished.

Caveat emptor.  Beautiful and costly as it is, I'd be skeptical of a dash that old given the well established aging behavior of the materials.  Time and oxygen are not friendly to the urethane foam under the skin.  Over time it dramatically loses pliability.  How'd you feel if it cracked or deformed during installation?  :-[  Needs an on-site inspection before buying IMO.  Unless, of course, it has been stored in nitrogen in a cryogenic chamber.

a NOS speedometer for MPH cars

It's a weird one - EPC/Xentry doesn't recognise that part number at all. But it's a 300SD speedo.
There's no note on replacement part numbers either.

Looking at what's listed under speedometer, there were several versions of the MPH speedo:

1) 160mph / 250kph (all cars, except 6.9 and some US versions) - A0085428406
2) 85mph / 140kph (some US versions) - A0095424506
3) 170mph / 270kph (6.9 only) - A0085427806
4) 125mph / 200kph (300SD only, but it also used #2) - A0085429106
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: UTn_boy on 01 January 2020, 08:37 PM
The part number on the facia was never used in the parts catalogs or for reference in general, as it was never available separately.  The early 300SD speedometers were 125 MPH, and the last 300SD cars had 85 MPH speedometers.  This is when the U.S. department of transportation thought it was a good idea to mandate a national 55 MPH speed limit on all interstates across the nation.  It was in part due to a fuel crisis, but also because the people running the DOT at the time were ancient and couldn't grasp the concept of new cars being able to safely travel at high rates of speed.

For the 300SD speedometer, there were three part numbers for the speedometer.

125 MPH was 008-542-91-06 (up to ID number 014083)
85 MPH was   009-542-24-06 (from ID number 014084)
200 KPH (for Canada) was 008-542-92-06.

And, as Lucas stated, the 125 MPH one was used for other 6 cylinder variants, as well.

I kind of like it, though. It could almost serve as a middle seat and a storage box. But, that would be an awkward seating arrangement on a W116, even if it was a column shift version.

I did my research on this. Brief, it's from a village in the deep south of Germany where handicraft has been the thing for ages. Wood, ceramics, the lot. It has the markers in the back to prove origin.  "Volkskunst Rottal-Inn KBB"
This was a project, commissioned by a Mercedes dealership back in 1985. Thus, not an official MB HQ commission, but surely something quite unique for a garage or man-cave.

If it's from 1986, why does it have what appears to be a post-facelift W124 or, more likely, a W202 under the 1986 marking?
Neither car was public until 1993 :)

I call fake on this piece.
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: floyd111 on 09 June 2020, 07:45 AM
True, the part of the W124. I was so busy trying to find an origin behind that very difficult-to-read label in the back that I dropped the ball on production year, presuming it must have been commissioned for the 100 year anniversary. Kind of makes sense  to NOT do that a couple of years AFTER, haha. Guess they did still.
Nothing much to fake there, since it's clearly not an official MB issue of any kind, just handicraft from Rottal-Inn. If you do some more searches for KBB and Rottal-inn, you'll find that a lot of stuff that comes from there is quite collectable.
I wouldn't mind having it hang on my wall, if only it said "1978", like the rest of my little museum-to-be

NOS Sunroof deflector for W116 with seal.
Now, he says 'pickup only", but with an extra 10 bucks, on top of the 20 he asks, and 20 for international shipping inc tracking, One could persuade him and obtain this thing for 50 bucks all-in, delivered to your door.
That would not be a bad deal, me thinks. Might even get lucky and persuade him without extra cost, and ship for 16 bucks without tracking, like i always do, leaving but 36 bucks all-in
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: AndreasF on 07 July 2020, 04:42 PM

An information for those who do not speak German: only the sunroof deflector and the seal are sold there, but no assembly material!

And of course I have nothing to do with the seller! :)
Title: Re: ebay finds
Post by: floyd111 on 07 July 2020, 05:37 PM
Indeed. But since there would be more replacement deflector installs, rather than freshly installed sunroofs, the missing brackets in this kit would be on the car already. :D

Sold!
Since nobody else did, I bought it myself. Let's see whether this is real, with international shipping to taiwan for 40 bucks..
I saw a bit of red speckle in one pic, but the original inner coating was still visible and pretty new on all bumper parts. Spain is a good place to buy vintage metal. Like Arizona.
No dents that I could see.
The day is gonna come I am gonna be happy with another spare rear bumper.
Parking this battleship in the city.. zillions of scooters on my tail.. Something is gonna hit that bumper eventually.
But for now, let's see whether any of this is real. Seems too good of a deal.

The seller, still nice enough, is finding himself in a pickle, with couriers quoting anywhere from 550 to 860 to germany or taiwan. Guess he -and I- really didn't know. You did.
I had a center bar in mind, while everyone else was looking at an assembled bumper.

So it IS a left side headlight.

These days them Beckers apparently need to fetch the value of a month's disposable income. And then often not even complete.
This one got the amp and the booklet, it's a stereo and  it's a cassette. Quite possible the price can drop a bit under 250. Just sayin.

it took a while, but the bumper arrived! Just the main bar, for shipping the complete bumper set simply would have been unaffordable. Costs all-in 414 euro, to my door in Taiwan. That is not cheap, but buying and shipping a new one from VDH would have been 4x more expensive.
Still, for that money you'd want a real nice specimen. And it is! Almost spotless.
So, in the end, it wasn't 40 euros in shipping, and it took quite a few mails back and forth, but turned out a pretty good deal.
Thinking to maybe mount that one first, while I learn to park that car in hectic Taipei.

Interesting that they always seem to crack in that spot first,  likely the point where the vinyl is most stressed due to the bend and of course sun exposure.

Mine now also has two tiny cracks both sides of that bulge, so I'd say they do indeed start there first.

In my case these cracks developed in the last five years since the resto, despite the car spending most of its life in a blacked out garage.

Bloody annoying, but what else can you do?
