Title: Dump old W116s ?
Post by: Denis on 12 May 2006, 12:13 PM
Hi fellows

I am curious. My D-jet is dead, does that mean that folks on this list "dump/junk/scrap" old (1973-1975)W116s or that they pay the insane list price of 1206â,¬ or 1733 USD for an MPS ? and what else needs replacing also ...  and NO, the ECU is not the problem, it has high standards of build.

Actually, I am happy to have electronic injectors to convert to something else as the old K-jet is certainly not the best in power output and fuel consumption and in some ways, less refined than D-jet.

I am almost tempted to start a Megasquirt upgrade offering for W116s once I have sorted out the realities. Maybe make it a home business, why not ? I have actually bought/paid/got involved with the unit in kit form and am looking forward to making a W116 run better. And frankly, it does bind my skills and areas of interest.

Now can anyone make 4 valve heads for the M116/M117  ::)

Didn't realise that's how GMH came into being Big Richard.  Interesting, and if an Aussie merger happened instead we'd have roads clogged with Foldens and Hords.

Hey Big Richard, do you have any more details of the conversion?
Wouldn't that make things easy to be able to rock up to a shop and have the conversion done, or buy an all inclusive kit with comprehensive instructions.  More details pls.

Similarly Denis, if you've got the know how, go for it.  BTW, why the valve heads?  I'll have to go back and read the magasquirt links again.

Sounds good big Richard !

That is also what Megasquirt with the ignition control module does. Do you know if the crank position sensor on M116/M117 can be used ? There is one and I know very little about it. If it's a VR sensor that can be used by MS.

Where do aussie O2 sensors fit on these engines ? I was thinking to add a short adaptor under the exhaust manifold right before the downpipe. Set on both sides with two sensors, it could work well.

Thanks for the tip

Always suspected folks down under were pretty smart  ;D

QuoteHehe, I was mearly giving an example of what Aussies can do when, A) were not drunk and B) when theres a way we can save money.

Hmmm, aussie hey, nah, sounds Irish/Scottish to me but then I bet there are a lot of Celtic people in the Oz bloodline. be careful though, the Scottish tribes fought each other so well that they never saw the English coming after them - hey  ::) uhhh :-\ I'll drink to that say Macaulay  ;D

Here is a real Nazi "car police" bureaucrat story : one fellow here had retrofitted SU carbs on a Triumph TR-5A that originally has the "prince of darkness" electronic injection. After an accident, the insurance company refused to pay because of that  >:( >:( >:(

The GM Holden thing is a definite "crime" to these bureaucrats. I am alreadydoing something daring but figure that if the car does not have a hint of not being D-jet, I am fairly safe in case of big trouble.
I will therefore reuse all the D-jet stuff which, except for the TPS, is OK. Being German parts, a BOSCH TPS will look right in any case - the bureaucrats don't go as far as checking parts numbers...but I wouldn't try a bigger throttle body for instance...

I am getting Megasquirt from Switzerland, where you can do car mods as you wish...methinks the car mode thing in France is just to sell more Renault/Peugeot/Citroen garbagemobiles...

This country has GOT to change but you can keep those Big Macs please  ;)
