Hello everyone,
I work for a restoration specialist based in the UK and we're really struggling to locate a drag link which needs replacing.
It carries the part number A1164601205 and I believe this might well be specific to the 6.9 model.
If anyone could guide me in the direction of where one might be found, I would be very appreciative as we are keen to return this lovely W116 to the road, where it belongs!

So, I've been doing some more digging online and there appears to be an alternative, third party non oem part, that the likes of Pelican have in stock; part number 1234601505.
I'm a little concerned that this part is for a regular, non 6.9 car and won't be suitable for our bigger engined variant. Any thoughts?

To my knowledge the drag link is specific to the 6.9. Check with the MB Classic Centre but I'm pretty sure this part is NLA so you'll have to find a NOS one.
The 6.9 uses a specific one different to the other 116 models. I bought mine through the dealer chain in South Africa 18 months ago, and I subsequently found out it was the last one, or one of the last ones. Obviously that doesn't help you. I can only suggest that you search online with the part number for a NOS unit.

Some tie rods are, and it depended on who Mercedes had make them at the time. I've never seen a green drag link that as an actual Mercedes part. But then again that may be coincidence.

If the ball joints are tight then you can always just change out the boot kit and put in fresh grease. If they flop around then it's bad news of course. In the manual they talk about "break away" torque thus initially the joint should be hard to move by hand but after movement starts it should still be tight but smooth to move by hand. At least this is how I understand it ;D
Can anybody comment on the removal procedure? I was hoping to just get it out with a couple sharp, well placed hammer blows on the a punch centered on the depression on the spindle shaft. Of course that didn't work and I don't want to mess up the threads. MB manual section 46-550 says that a special MB puller (P/N 123 589 09 33 00) is needed. I'm not keen on scouring the globe for that. Are any generic pullers OK? Thanks and cheers,
Oh, by the way: I do have a light green version on my 6.9. It is an original MB-Part. See part numer and see pictures.

You will want to use a tie rod puller. You can usually rent for free from local parts store.
Sometime whacking REALLY hard the side of the part that the end goes in will knock them loose, but that rarely works for me.
Even with the puller be careful you can still mess the threaded end up.

Yup this is the kind of job suspension shops make look easy. I've only ever seen them use the big effing hammer technique, one, two wacks and they just pop them out. I've also never had luck with that and have had to resort to a variety of pullers which invariably destroys the boot.

Wow. Harbor freight promises that I'll be able to 'easily remove tie rods and pitman arms in seconds' !! And for only US$16.- I'll give it a shot. Thanks.
