Door Handle Key Cylinder Different Sizes?

Started by mummyjohn, 04 July 2020, 01:20 PM

I recently bought a handle to replace my broken one, and when changing the key cylinder/barrel/tumbler from one to the other it became apparently impossible as the diameter of the outside (that you see on the handle) is different on each.  The "back" (business end) is identical.

Old: 0.7375" diam
New: 0.6615" diam

Does anyone know from where this difference arises, so I may search for the right type?

I have no idea what model of W116 you have.  So we're going to cover them all. There isn't anything more than an educated guess as to When the change took place.  Mercedes never noted a date when changes took place.  It was always up to a certain chassis number and from a certain chassis number.

Below is what all models used up to a certain chassis number.  This would be the smaller of the two that you show in the picture.

UP TO CHASSIS
020     110396
024     127926
032,033 086636
036     005181
120     004726

Below is what all models used from a certain chassis number.  This would be the larger of the two that you show in the picture.

FROM CHASSIS
020     110397
024     127927
032,033 086637
036     005182

The way to know what you need buy is simple.....make sure the key hole is just like your old one, as they're vastly different.
