Distributor cap- centre ignition post melted!

Was doing routine checking of my ignition/spark plug wires and I took the boot off the wire from the ignition coil and the centre post had burnt/melted almost all the way 'round and disintergrated into white powdery dust! Luckily I had a spare dizzy cap- any guesses to the cause of this?

Does the inside of the cap have carbon tracking? Also maybe test the resistance of the distributor rotor to see if it's too high and replace.

I'd recently had the cap off to clean all the contacts, as well as the rotor tip etc. and everything was in good condition, this is why I was suprised to see it had disintergrated. I'm thinking there must have been an electrical surge of some kind causing the damage.

Hi fellows

Another possibility is a crack or cracks that allowed major arcing and degradation of the distributor cap. I saw this many years ago on a 1960 Volkswagen.
