Yes, his time at the wreckers would have been better spent looking for the part rather than "feeling for knobs".

Thanks guys.  When I wrote that comment I thought I'd be in trouble.....

Well an update on this sad saga...

Just before Christmas, wbrian63 came to the rescue with this thread : Link

He kindly took great care in removing the required part from his parts car, and inspected all important aspects of it, and sent me photos to peruse.

The item has been shipped, and I expect it to arrive here in the next 10 days or so.

A big THANKS to Brian - he truly deserves the W116.ORG virtual medal for camaraderie and fellowship.

Quite a saga indeed.

That's excellent news.

Great news.

Of interest I removed the left hand caliper off my parts 450 and it had one thread that had been similarly butchered.

Methinks you would have to be very ham-fisted to buggar up something as straight forward and as accessible as that - but obviously people do.

It seems many people are more ham-fisted that one ordiarily gives them credit for  :(

I only now read about the knob-feeling at the breaker's - well, you put your foot into that one, S Class... and it provided for lekker laugh!  ;D

Have a look at job 33-420 page 2 for the identification of 6.9 steering knucles.

u sent me on a wild goose chase - it was in 33-400 that showed the 116-036 reinforced knuckle with the hump ;)

I'm going to go have a look at my car now, because i swear i dont have these.

***Edit: Yes, I do have the correct ones, but the humps arent as pronounced as the pictures make them out to be - they are ~7mm diameter 2-3mm tall flat "lumps"

WGB

The "George Michael" method of parts acquisition doesn't discriminate between sizes. ;D

Mine definitely had them when I replaced my big ball joints as I had read that job description and knew about it before I started.

Here is a "before" photo and although the contrast is a bit flat on the left one on the right one you can see the lump/bump/knob.
