craking engine then CLUNK and won't crank - starter?
« on: 07 July 2019, 01:33 PM »
The fun never ends.  I was cranking the engine for a long time after doing other work.  Finally engine starts to catch and there's a loud CLUNK and it stops dead.  Lights dim with key in 'start' position but no cranking, no click, nothing.  I'm thinking that all my cranking toasted the starter &/or solenoid.  Make sense?

It then becomes apparent that, though the starter bolts are readily accessible, there looks to very little space to wiggle the starter through all the suspension bits.  Any tricks to removing a 6.9 starter before I waste hours making something easy into something hard?  Cheers,
-Dave

Dave, I have previously removed and refitted the starter on my LHD 6.9.  It's doable albeit not easy to do without other stripping work.

Have you tried turning the engine manually with a ratchet to see firstly if the engine itself is free, and secondly to maybe see if doing so will get the starter to release.

Good suggestion, haven't tried yet.  I'll do so.
