Best Engine Gasket materials ?

Started by raueda1, 17 September 2019, 11:44 AM

I'm looking for various odd-shaped engine gaskets - distributor housing to block, oil filter to block, aux air valve, etc etc.  Seems to me that in the time it takes to source them, and then find out that most are NLA anyhow, I could just go ahead and make them.  But what's the best gasket material?  The gaskets in all these examples seems to be of the thin, paper variety and sealing against oil or fuel leaks at modest pressures.  We all hate leaks.  Seems like somebody must have made these or similar gaskets.  I'm thinking of using Karropak. Thanks,

I've used the Karropak stuff, seems to have held up nicely.  But I cover the paper gasket in a thin layer of Permatex Aviation Form - a - gasket before I mount it in place.  I am sure some folks will scoff at this but it works for me ;)

I also use Permatex or Hylomar and it works well, not for all applications but for most,

Given that the head gaskets are still available in the head gasket kits, It looks like there are only two gaskets you'll have to make!  :)  Though, I've no idea what can be done about the valve cover gaskets that are no longer available.  Not even the aftermarket companies will agree to make them due to how little demand there is for them.

I got the respective kits.  The stuff they contain is bolded in your excellent list. I might have missed one or two items, there's a lot.  Both kits contain valve cover and intake manifold gaskets, so when you get both you get double.  From the Classic Center the kits were also slightly cheaper than the prices indicated.  Everybody should get those kits cause....  you never know!

I wonder why the head gasket kits include the hydraulic pump to block gasket?  I forget.....but there may be a chain rail pin behind the hydraulic pump.  Maybe that's why.

The prices I stated were retail price, and I expect that many places will do better than full retail.  I just wanted to state the retail prices so if anyone else ordered these parts they'd know if they were getting ripped off or not.  Many dealerships and online sellers will charge more than retail.  I just can't stand when unsuspecting buyers get ripped off.  Often times they buyers don't know any different, and so many sellers take advantage of that.

There is a seller "dichtungsshop" on ebay.de who sells valve cover gaskets for the 6.9. You also get a full set of valve seals as part of the set. Hard to beat IMHO ;)
