Best battery for a 6.9

Hi guys

OK I've had enough with my el cheapo battery I have in the 6.9 >:(  Lasted 4 years and it's done like dinner, but then again I got what I paid for ::)

Anybody care to give a plug for a bomber battery recommendation?  I think Interstate makes a decent battery for bang for the buck, and I "think" the genuine Benz batteries are now NLA?  I would like a nice original Benz one in there, I think it looks mighty fine, even though I guess you can get a stronger/better battery for less?

Thoughts?

Cheers

I got a genuine Mercedes battery for my 300SD, but it's probably the same one, part number 000 982 33 08. EPC also showed a part number 004 541 03 01, but as discontinued. It was $167 but I got it for $150 after my MBCA discount.

Hi Dan
Here is mine,(click link to see post) hasn't given a moment's trouble. Much smaller than the large Bosch I had before, nevertheless powers all my auxiliaries okay. You will notice that my battery is a A000 982 31 08, unsure what the difference is. Also, the red tab to prevent the terminal touching the hood in event of an accident and arching out is: MA 001 546 08 35.
Currently driving Mrs White in France.
Keep 116ing,
;)

The batteries get fried in the 6.9 but the genuine batteries are about the best you can get. It's not uncommon to get 10 years out of them in later models.

Thanks guys going to see if I can get one from the local dealer ;D
Not sure if the big boy 3308 will fit though? Space is tight in the 6.9 8)

Can you elaborate?  Do they get cooked from extreme engine heat?  I suspect I'll be looking at a new battery soon.  Thx,

Daniel, when I parted out the 280SE I found out that the battery on the 280 gas and 300SD is larger than the one on the 450s, because the battery tray is of a different size. If the 6.9 takes the same battery as the 450, you need a Group 48 (38.5 x 17 cm). I went for a Bosch which ended up costing me about $170 tax in. I remember I asked for a dealer quote and was out of this world.

Thanks Florin yes I think this is going to be a "fun" problem to solve. I emailed Tom @ the Classic Center just for laughs but I'm sure they will be
a) NLA
b) not be able to be shipped or ridiculous shipping costs.

Will update the thread once I have a winner.

I measured the battery tray and for sure it won't fit the larger Group 49 battery which sits @ 14 inches/36mm.  I think with the larger diesel battery tray it will fit but it will be hella tight in there...Mmm, this seems like a challenge ::)

Problem is that it looks like the tray/battery will get really close to the RHS exhaust manifold so even with a heat shield the temps will be probably too high to be safe.

So many oddities and anomalies between models, and even within the same model.  I just measured my battery tray and it's 39-40cm long, easily enough for Group 49.

My roommate got the smaller 000 982 31 08 74AH battery for his 1965 W111 220S. It was $130.77 at the dealership after my 10% MBCA discount.

We use DIN codes for Euro batteries here in Aus. Is this group 49 the same as DIN 85L or DIN 88?

just to make sure.. Is it possible that the tray was replaced along the way (they rust a lot) and whomever did that installed a tray from a bigger W116?
