Hi friends,
My 450 SEL arrived Friday and I drove it for the first time. It's in fantastic condition and I'm delighted.
I noticed the Becker Europa radio stays on even after it's turned off and the rear speakers buzz. Is there any information on the forum/web about this?
Thank you
Are you sure the volume knob is clicking off when you turn it fully counterclockwise? It should make a firm click when off.
Yes, it definitely has some resistance to turning and then a solid click.
While not solving the (possible broken Becker button) issue here, does the radio not switch off when you take the key out? Or are/were they directly wired to a uninterrupted battery feed?
Oh yes it turns off when the key is out.
In that case I would think this is a broken Becker button. Power supply from the car, on/off works, so I think that is that.
Not fixing that problem would also be a good option. :D
there is a good chance someone retrofitted this and its live off the battery, not the fuse box. is there a separate wire to the battery positive terminal and perhaps this is the radio power confirming someone added power to it improperly?
Ha ha not fixing the problem is a definite short term fix. I should add that when I turn on the radio it does get louder, it's just that when I turn it off there is still some faint radio sound coming through and a loud constant buzzing noise.
You could try your luck and spray some contact spray in the button..
I've read about contact spray in the forum. What makes that so special? It must be some sort of non-conducting cleaner..

They're nothing special. Just heavy duty, highly volatile solvents (acetone, toluene etc.) to remove grease and grime from electrical contacts without dismantling things.
Very similar to brake cleaner spray. Nasty stuff you don't want to breathe-in.
