Hi All
I have a 280SE, W116 1979.
Literally overnight, the transmission does not change gears in D or S.
If I go in L, and change to S/D, It will move up to 2nd gear. But in S/D it is stuck in second.
I have checked ATF, fine. I have adjusted the rod, checked bushing, fine.
I have checked the vacuum pipe to the modulator (at least, I think it is the modulator), and there is suction.
If I hardckick, it does change down to 1st gear!
I am stumped...any leads/ideas please?
Thanks

Check kick down solenoid is working properly. Button/switch under pedal, make sure the carpet is not accidentally engaging the switch.  You can test by turning ignition to ON and pushing button by hand, then you should hear the solenoid click on and off as you push the button.

Well, it's fixed.
I did what @daantjie suggested: Cleaned around solenoid, and also clean the fuse as well.
Then took car out, and nothing! But then I read on the forum somewhere that may be I should welly it, and I did (at 8 am on a clear bit of road). At 50 mph, suddenly the gearbox kicked in and now sweet as a jam tart :)
That is a load off my mind.

Interesting, but good results. Maybe the solenoid was stuck?
