Automatic transmission ID

The car is a 1975 450 SE US-version (116.032)
The engine is a 1977 6.9 US-version (100.985) - a previous owner took out the original 4.5 and put in a 6.9

I crawled under the car tonight and read the transmission id: 116 2701701 722 004 02 119491

What does the number tell us?

- This is a 722.004 trans
- This is probably the trans from the original 4.5 car - definitely not the trans that goes with the 6.9 currently in the car (would have been 722.003)
- Hence, it must be "the weaker" W3A 040 trans (see pic)
- a 722.004 trans for 450 SE/SEL/SL/SLC 4.5 liter in the US & Japan market (see pic)

Agree?

Anything else we could read from the ID number?
I assume it's not a problem that the trans is a bit "weak" compared to the current engine?
Does that mean that the 722.0 transmissions have the same mounting surface, i.e. are interchangeable?

The bellhousings are different parts numbers in the EPC, 1162502705 for the m116 and 1162502305 for the m100, so I would hazard a guess that the mounting surfaces are not the same and that the PO swapped the bellhousings.

If they were the same and it were my car, I would get the ELBE adapter (https://www.elbe-engineering.com/product/m117-4-5-tranny-adapter-722-6-m113/) to fit a 722.6 5 speed auto behind it. You would also need a reworked driveshaft, a transmission controller (https://ofgear.dk/), electronic speedometer (the updated, 81+ R107 has one that is direct fit), and compatible shifter (late 90s shifters could be made to fit without looking out of place), among other things, to make it work. The more modern gearing and better availability/reliability of the 722.6 would make the car much more enjoyable.

Thanks for the idea, sounds tempting .... down the road

I know Elbe based on hearsay. They also do a lot of other stuff, e.g. engine rebuild, tuning, EFI conversions, etc

So the 722.6 5-speed is the one to go for?

The 722.6 is great for conversions, and very popular in the W124 world where it's put in place of the 722.4 and 722.5, especially in turbo conversions as the 722.6 has a very beefy version used in the S55 AMG (W220 if memory serves).

For the W116 there's also a six-speed manual conversion kit available.

If you want to go manual i think the older BMW 5 speed Getrag might work.  Or if you want to drop big $$$ check out Tremec 5 speed ;D  anything is possible with enough time/money...

daantjie, to go for BMW and Tremec transmissions sounds almost like cheating  ;)

A 722.6 would be a dream .... maybe in a few years time ... first I need to fix the other items on my to-do list

In parallel I'm trying to understand the car's systems and "inventory". E.g. it surprised me that the previous owner combined a 722.004 transmission with the 6.9 (should have had the 722.003 "reinforced").

We have a W124 300D that we have done this swap in so that's where my knowledge comes from. Very best version of the transmission is the one from the turbo v12 cars, the 722.649, but the AMG V8 ones are much easier to find. I had planned to put one of these behind my superturbo om606 in my 116 300SD but I'm now considering figuring out a ZF 8 speed.
