Title: Any Tips/pics/tutorials/advice on head removal, '74 450SEL?
Post by: chinny4290 on 06 September 2019, 12:05 PM
Hey all.

So in the process of doing my seals, I found I have a worn exhaust valve guide on Cylinder 8 (poooopooo)....

are there any solid DIY or tutorials on head removals for the M117 4.5, besides the factory manual? Any tips?

Never have come across one. I used the manual, as you say not very instructive, and just worked through it. Hard work and a lot of time but not impossible.

I have to do similar work to my 280SE (pull the head new seals to stop oil blow by, inspect cylinders)

What special tools are a required for removal and installation? Going of the top of my head
Timing chain breaker
Slide pin removal tool
Timing Chain crimper tool
The special (hex?) socket 145-150mm long

Although the manual will tell you that certain "special" tools are required you can get by with the the tools a reasonably equipped workshop should have. Pulling the pins for the chain guides, if you are going to replace them or want the cover off, can be easily done by a home made tool.
