Title: Aftermarket alloy wheels for my 6.9
Post by: jllgd on 26 August 2010, 07:59 AM
I haven't posted much here but I'll give this a try:

Now looking to get either 17" or 18" alloys for my Mercedes 6.9.
I have been thinking of getting a set of 8+9 x17" or maybe 8+9 x 18".

What offset values will fit, and which ones will NOT fit?
I haven't really been able to sort this out when looking for new wheels on eBay etc.

There MUST be some offset numbers that are recognized by owners that will fit on the W116 cars?
(Realize all W116 cars are the same with regards to wheel offsets???)
I am not very keen to buy a full set of new alloys and later find out that I haven't done my homework...
Thanks!

The original 14" bundts have an offset of 30.  You don't want to go to a higher offset than this (which would move the wheels inwards).  As the wheel size increases, it seems necessary to reduce the offset slightly to avoid clearance problems on the inner side.  For example, 7Jx15 bundts are et25 for genuine MB, or et23 for aftermarket.  8Jx16 pentas are et11.  I would surmise that an 8Jx17et11 wheel would fit similarly to an 8Jx16et11 wheel.

Whilst I haven't directly answered your question, the above may help to give you something to go on.

Guys,

Any updates on what you ended up with? I'm considering looking for some wheels (period) to suit. Thinking mesh / chrome lips. Thoughts pics etc?

Anything between ET11 and ET30 will be ok.  Beyond those limits and it'll be trial and error regarding clearance and handling issues.  Personally I'd look at 16" or 18" in diameter to ensure there's a wide choice of tyres available.  Larger diameters will mean very low tyre profiles to keep the speedo and gearing correct and unfortunately such tyres will give a rough ride and the rims won't be protected from severe bumps.  I'd suggest no more than 8" wide to avoid any clearance issues too.

Thanks mate.

I'm thinking the Porsche fuchs might be the go, or if I can't find them or get the right offsets then I will look at minilites. Any other suggestions?

Ps here's the fuchs pcb and offsets.

911 Fuchs Wheel Data

Size       Offset      Backspacing   Part #
4.5x15...42mm.....100mm...........901.361.012.01
5.5x15...42mm.....112mm...........901.361.012.04
6 x 15....36mm.....112mm...........901.361.012.06
7 x 15....49mm.....138mm...........901.361.012.05(R)

8 x 15....10.6mm..112mm............911.361.020.42
9 x 15....3mm......117mm............911.361.020.03
6 x 16....36mm.....112mm...........911.362.113.00
7 x 16....23.3mm..112mm............911.362.115.00
7 x 16....23.3mm..138mm............951.362.115.00(944)
8 x 16....10.6mm..112mm............911.362.117.00
8 x 16....23.3mm..125mm............951.362.117.00(944)
9 x 16....15mm.....130mm...........911.362.118.00

It looks like the 23.3 mm would be the go. Thoughts?

And regarding 944 vs 911 fuchs I found this.

The 15" Fuchs fitted to 944's had the same offsets as those fitted to 911's:

7x15 - ET (offset) = 23.3mm
8x15 - ET = 10.6mm

With the 16" Fuchs things were a bit different:

7x16 - ET = 23.3mm (911 & 944)
8x16 - ET = 23.3mm (944) 10.6mm (911)

There was also a difference in the 944 lugnut recesses on the 8x16" Fuchs

So what on earth is 'backspacing'??  So you're thinking of putting Porsche wheels on a MB?  I'd check the spigot hole diameter in the centre of the wheel to make sure they fit and locate properly.  They'd certainly be light!  Any pix of the wheels you had in mind??

Fuchs are here but I can't get the pcd / adapters / offsets / spigot bearing etc to work. Even using adaptors to get bolt offsets right the wheels don't have the correct et.

I'm no expert but backspacing more or less equals "et" which is the other name for offset . There's some good images on google. It is an american term.

These wheels are copies of the fuchs made for the vw community so pcd / bolt pattern fits but offsets aren't very friendly. I have emailed asking about custom et / backspacing but am yet to hear back.

I wouldn't go over 16". The W116 has smaller wheel arches to newer cars and it would look silly. If you can find a nice set of Lorinsers or BBS from the 80's, they will look pretty good on that car.

I think it's a matter of personal taste.  I like the 16" wheels too, but there's a few 18" ones I like as well.  There's a set of 19" wheels I really like but the low profile tyres would look weird and they'll too prone to damage from pot holes, as even the best drivers can be caught by surprise!

Try these for size!

And when the link disappears, they are custom 16" split bund rims:

WOW they're nice!  The only problem is the front wheel offset is too high at ET35.....

Nice. Where'd you find the below pics? Any of this on a car?

I saw these advertised by a Russian guy (or any of the old Soviet states) and that left such impression I had to investigate possibility to replicate or derive.

This local dude that does the rims said "from $2500 a set" if using some fancy name outer and if I supplied the Baroques... but could not be street legal.
That's equal to 2 sets of AMG's...
