hi all
i had the mechanic look at my brakes today and he recommended that i replace the calipers if i can find some at a reasonable price. i think i may aswell replace disc's, pads and hoses while i am at it.

a quick search gives me a part numbers for the calipers 1234200683 and 1234200583 would this be correct for a 1976 450se?

any recomendations advice on calipers discs etc would be appreciated, the calipers on it at the moment are Ate

regards
john

On the 6.9, and I think this is the same for all 450's as well, these are the numbers:

Rear calipers are as you have them:
123 420 06 83 and 123 420 05 83

Fronts are:
116 420 0183 and 116 420 00 83

As for brand, cannot really go wrong with ATE, I am a big fan, and have all ATE setup on my 6.9.

Safety first, peeps ;)!

I bought a set of ATE for my 6.9, turns out calipers from the main dealer were cheaper..

Are calipers and disks sizes different throughout the model range??

I'd also recommend replacing the rubber brake hoses with stainless steel braided ones, ideally with brass unions. They won't deteriorate nearly as easily as the OEM part, and rust is a non-issue. Complete W116 set can be had for ~130EUR delivered and is well worth the price.

i got ATE calipers discs and pads for approx 350€ from germany, should be in the post today didn't think to ask at the MB dealership even though i have just bought some rear light seals from them @50€ each, so the dealer was cheaper than neimoler  that's for sure, and i can pick them up which will save postage.

Lukas i had bought some brake hoses already to address a problem i had where the pedal would not return fully when warm i haven't fitted them yet,  the problem  hasn't returned since but the screeching when warm has encouraged me to replace everything at the back.

irvine when i was looking using the numbers 1234200683 and 1234200583 i was only shown 280's and 350's but after a few inquiries i found them listed for a 450 so it looks like those calipers fit all the model range????? more knowledgeable heads will have a definitive answer

all the best john

The Calipers for the entire W116 model range are the same, although they were manufactured to the same specification by two different companies.  ATE and Bendix. but no difference from the 280se up to the 6.9

I think early W116s had non-vented front rotors or something along that line. Also, Bendix calipers seem wider than ATE so they would fit US-spec front brake pads, which were thicker than the rest of the world. I think, though, that current ATE replacements are made to the same width as were the Bendix ones.

I had a 1973 280SE and the front disc with hub went into my 1977 6.9. All 116 disks are the same size all round.

I thought for sure there was a difference in early versus late W116 rotors, to the point where people on this site were complaining about having to pay $200 a rotor for early W116 versus $30 a rotor for late W116. With that said, I think that later rotors will fit earlier hubs, but the calipers have to be changed or something.

There were discussions regarding the ATE rotors before. Based on the feedback, I'd be careful.

Check this out, early W116 rotors are smaller in diameter than late W116, and they use different calipers, too: https://forum.w116.org/mechanicals/brake-rotors/

i will keep ye posted, i should have this done in the next 2 weeks. if there is an issue it looks likely to be the discs (hopefully)  and the discs on my car are not bad i was changing them as all else was being changed.

we will see

hi all

i had the disc's pads and calipers fitted today, also replaced some brake pipe as well . i noticed that the brake travel was greatly increased compared to before fitting should we bleed it again or could it be the master cylinder?

i thought it may have been the master cylinder when recently the pedal wasn't returning fully when the brakes were hot.

and the foot brake is very hard so i will have a chat with the mechanic in the next few days

any advice welcome

john
