A/C Compressor Removal

Is that the alternator bracket in the top right of your picture and if so did you leave it in just to make the job more awkward just like I did.

If it is removed (5 bolts from memory) there is a huge increase in working room.

It is indeed. I wanted to remove it, but the bolt closest to the chain tensioner flange is so close I couldn't fit a socket over it. I'll have a good look at it tomorrow, as I really want to remove it. Removing the compressor was not overly difficult, however getting it back on is going to be a real pain, I think, particularly with that bracket in the way.

My alternator bracket is attached wit a mix of normal hex head bolts and socket head bolts which always seemed a bit odd, maybe clearance is the reason, I had put it down to slackness by someone sometime.

Boogity, Boogity, Boogity, Amen!

Mine were all normal  bolts and there were no clearance issues on any of them.

Just make sure you are not mixing up some engine block and head bolts that sit close to the bracket but are not actually holding it on.

It makes it so much easier to put it back together as the compressor is a dead weight when you are trying to centre mounting bolts.

I managed to remove the alternator bracket this morning... I found an el-cheapo 6-point socket with a thin wall that fitted perfectly. I spent the rest of the day cleaning and polishing various parts. Tomorrow will be much the same.

Looking good.

It makes for a lot of room gained with that bracket removed.

Why dont you just rock the M100 around in its mounts with one hand to see if they are still good  ;D
That's classic :D

I'm replacing my engine mounts in my next round of "improvements" as the new found low end power with a new timing chain causes some engine to body noise on full throttle take-offs and the sight of a bare engine mount with good access makes me quite envious.

My RH mount was only about 1/4 the height and had a big piece of rubber hanging off.

The book says it can be done with all ancillaries in place but that picture makes me envious.

I've been thinking about those engine mounts... I don't know how you would get at the bolt on the engine side of the mount with everything in place. Perhaps raising the engine gives you enough clearance, but that RHS mount is well hidden.
When I replaced the ones on the 450 (completely collapsed), I removed the single bolt that goes into the arm and jacked up the engine to allow me to undo the two bolts holding the mount to the X-member. In practice, it was somewhat more difficult than that though, hence the fact that I'm considering replacing these too, while I have access.

The pics would have made me envious if I was in your situation, I must say.  8)

Yes PB, I've ordered the three mounts as I also want to replace the automatic tailshaft seal - so it will all be apart.

I have gipped at the little shock absorber parts but will see what mine are like and can always replace them later.

After years of working on Mercedes and Jaguars my fingers all point backwards ;D so anything is possible.

Thanks for the offer PB.

I assume you are talking about the nut on the flange of the gearbox tailshaft.

I have a tool order from the States arriving this week (Hopefully) and have ordered the Suspension Coil Spring Compressor (No use on 6.9's but safer for the 450), The pin puller for the Timing Chain rails, and the socket for the gearbox/pinion flange nuts.

I ordered the special socket for the rear axle bearings as well but he was out of stock - so maybe next trip.

And ditto they will be available to trusted local members to borrow.
