Title: A Lightweight A/C Compressor for a 450 SEL ?
Post by: kertbache on 17 July 2022, 03:18 PM
The A/C on the 450 SEL that I've recovered and restored hasn't been used for over ten years, so it needs to be recommissioned. As it will require removing the compressor, so as the change the oil to PAG46, and make it compatible with 134A refrigerant. I'm interested to know if anyone has fitted a modern lightweight compressor ? And if so, what make and model number is most suitable ?

My friend on his W126 used a Sandon clone for a York replacement and worked well the last 2 summers here in
 central Australia

Yes, on my 450 SEL 1979 (that had already been converted to R134a).

Web search to Classic Auto Air (formally RetroAir) in the USA
E: sales@classicautoair.com

Click on tab for "GM/Jaguar A6 Replacement"

And have a read, I was suitably impressed myself and 10 years plus AOK  8.

It will come with the oil in the compressor and there are some different types but mine came with R134a oil which mine had already so straight swap. If you are running a R12 that oil is very different so would need to flush out, not sure how that is done in a house garage, may need someone who knows what they are doing. Don't forget to replace receiver drier to  ;)

Thanks Goldacre.

I know about the oil having to be compatible with the 134A refrigerant gas, and I have already purchased an new dryer,

I'm specifically interested to know if there's a light weight compressor that is suitable for my 450SEL, so I'll
email the company and enquire. Do you know the part number of the compressor you have fitted ?

Hi Kertbache,

The part number is SUACO-5004CA for a A6/S6 compressor with PAG oil (invoice dated 2013, things may have changed...)

It's pretty much an off the shelf improved A6 which is a GM designed compressor and is a very widely used (standard issue on our Mercs and then some...) but physically unchanged compressor.

Glad you emailed them as I found them very helpful with Q&A, hope it works out  8)

I have finally found a lightweight compressor for the W116.

Replaces GM - Delphi - Harrison A/C Compressors A-6 and fits in older Mercedes - Jaguar - Audi - Opel models

The CoolPro S-6 replaces the GM - Delphi - Harrison A-6 compressors.

The new modern S-6 compressor is made of aluminum and weighs only 5.9 kg compared to the metal A-6 of approx. 16 kg

A higher cooling capacity with less Power consumption is also an advantage.

The compressor fits the original attachments!
