'79 280SEL Parking brake cable snapped?

Hi everyone,

Recently I pulled up on a steep hill, with my foot on the brakes put the car in Park and then pulled the handle out of the dash to apply the hand/parking brake, but I was met with a loud SNAP noise from behind the handle and now the whole handle comes out! I think the connection at the end of the prong had snapped in the dash rather than something under the vehicle.

Any tips here? I don't even know how to access the area behind the handle.

Thanks!

I had something like this happen a few months ago.

If one of the rear cables jams within its sheathing, the ferule at the base of the handle mechanism under the dash remains in the extended position, and when you push the handle to the home position (off), it comes detached.

The connection point is immediately to the right of the accelerator pedal.

In this case you need to replace the rear hand brake cable(s).
