6.9 WUR orientation
« on: 06 November 2019, 09:52 AM »
My 6.9 WUR is oriented sideways per the picture.  I've can't recall this orientation in any of the 6.9 engine pix I've ever seen.   Unlike the upright WURs, mine uses a "soft" tube (nylon) to connect the WUR to the FD or damper or where ever it goes.   A hard line would be preferable IMO.  I've got the parts to change it to upright.  So here's the question:  Is it sideways for any good reason?  Any reason not to change it?  Comments eagerly welcomed and devoured.  Cheers,
-Dave

Hello Rueda,

Mounting position and soft line was changed in August 76 (from vin 1501) to upright position and steel line.

The sideways mount g is correct for very early 6.9s.  The first kjet 450s also had that setup.  I would keep it original, it's a nice identifying feature of the early cars.

Were there any known functional reasons that the orientation changed?

Mercedes has only documented that early cars had to be changed to the later setup
in case the WUR was exchanged (or other parts of the early setup are needed) as
the early parts were NLA even in the 70ies.
So no need to update in case anything works.

Thanks for the info!  I was concerned that it was due to something like thermal contact with the head or something like that.  So, original it will stay!
