Title: 6.9 Water Pump Replacement #2
Post by: TJ 450 on 23 June 2008, 05:38 AM
With the assistance of PB and Nathan, the water pump and housing was removed on Sunday.  :)
If it wasn't for PB's experience with his own pump and his 50mm socket, I would've been up the creek without a paddle. Thanks again ;)

The front of the engine...

The crankshaft seal housing...

The stuffed water pump...

The main parts...

It didn't go without problems, though. One bolt sheared off in the water pump housing, and part of the square base of the pump fractured during removal... you can see it in the image. Interestingly, the putrid liquid that came out of the block was a far cry from resembling coolant... more like iron oxide emulsion, even though what was in the radiator/overflow tank was clearish coolant!

I now have a lot of work to do. 8)

Did someone forget the Aeroguard?

The mossies must be wearing woollie jumpers at this time of year.

I'm so pleased AMG69 had mine done before I purchased the car - great team effort by the sounds of things.

I must have been lucky getting my water pump off, what with seized bolts and cracked pieces.

Didn't separate the pump front part from the housing, if I ever need to I'll worry.

Can't see the crack in the picture, where is it and is it repairable?

The crack is on the RHS upper mounting hole/tab. It should be fixable.

As of last night, I purchased the rebuilt water pump. Now I just have to wait for it to arrive.

Cost ? The company I use in Melbourne charges around $365 to rebuild the water pump.

It came to a total of AUD$450.72 inclusive P&H and a $200USD refundable core charge.

Well, I received my rebuilt pump today. It has well and truly exceeded my expectations.  :)
Now I just need to get the thermo housing flange machined and the remainder of the bolt removed from the housing and wait for the new bolts, washers and gaskets to arrive from Germany.

I picked up most of my bolts, washers and gaskets today. I'm just waiting on the distributor housing gasket and a spacer tube. The lower timing chain guides also went in today, which meant I could reinstall the crankcase cover with the appropriate sealant, taking care to grease the seal properly.

I still need to source a few more bolts and have the remains of one removed from the water pump housing before I can actually torque this thing up. I also need to install the new tensioner rail for the timing chain beforehand as well.
Don't worry, Bill. Return of your flywheel lock is not far away. 8)

Looking absolutely fantastic.

I hope it goes as well as it looks for all the time effort and money you are putting into it.

I have been thinking about the flywheel lock. It doesn't have as many teeth as the M-B recommended one but it does still hold 3 teeth at a time in either direction.

I can't imagine three teeth would let go at 400nM.

Hopefully it all goes to plan. It was actually going pretty well even before I started this lot of work, so I knew the car had a lot of potential.

I had been thinking about the three teeth situation in depth. I will play it by ear, tightening the nut up incrementally just to be sure.
