Title: 6.9 Timing Chain Going Out?
Post by: john erbe on 05 September 2020, 09:39 AM
Have an intermittent rotating noise up in that area but hard to pinpoint. Is there a telltale sign/noise that indicates that a chain is going out?

The 6.9 has a ratcheting tensioner so it would be unlikely that you are getting chain slap on the inside of the valve covers I would say.
Best bet would be to pull the valve covers and have a gander.  If you can easily lift the chain off the sprockets with your fingers then for sure the chain is clapped out.

If the chain is worn beyond the range of the tensioner you might get a noise. It's easily checked with the valve cover off though of course.
