If the rubber boot is still intact, then I doubt that the o-rings inside will have perished. I wouldn't bother with remanufacturing.

if you can make a replacement cover, that would be absolutley awesome.

I'm pretty sure TJ knows how to remove and replace the valve boots without dammaging them.

TJ 450

Yes indeed,

  • Remove lever/arm.
  • Press down on spring-loaded disc.
  • Pick out circlip whilst continuing to apply pressure.
  • Release assembly and withdraw components as one unit.

You will be left with the protruding shaft. There is a ring that retains the rubber seal at the base of the spring.

I packed the assembly with rubber grease, but hydraulic suspension oil may be more appropriate.

I'd actually be interested in pulling apart one of my old valves, just to see how the hell they work. Any idea how its done, i suspect that black back cover has to be removed. It looks like its pressed in too.

TJ 450

I'm also sure that the black cover needs to be removed. I would've thought it would screw off, but I don't know. Perhaps it's time to find out. ;)

if these things really are that easy to pull apart then i cant see how some people dare to charge upwards of 500$ for a re-manufactured valve. That's extortionate and an absolute outrage  8)

Yes, that black cover does unscrew. it's very tight!

Thats it, i'm pulling one apart!  8)

I wouldn't pull apart one of the new ones though. ;)

Nah, it will be one of my existing ones that i experiment with.

The new ones wont be fitted until I've purchased genuine fluid and flushed the system - I'm not risking them with ISO 68, in-spite of the radical transformation it makes to a 6.9's suspension system (ultra predictable handling and ridiculous grip like thrashing a new Lamborghini on Italian mountain roads)

The rear cover uncscrews.  Its super tight though.  Now some VERY good advice, learned the hard way.  The shaft must be withdrawn out the back, once the cover is off.  But before you do that, you MUST inspect the external part of the shaft carefully, especially the end where the lever is mounted.  Often there are burrs here that must be filed/sanded off before you withdraw the shaft.  If you don't do this, the burrs will score the inner bore of the aluminium valve assembly, and it will consequently never seal again with new seals.

Aside from that caution, disassembling is easy.  Reassembly though, is quite a challenge.

Seeing as my front valve leaks, I reckon I'll have to do this rebuild. Leaning from my mistakes though, I won't touch it until I have a backup vehicle. ;)

Thankyou sir, for your very informative post as usual. I will take this information on board when i pull apart my valve - No doubt TJ will be peering over my shoulder as this work is performed, since I'm now officially too lazy to work on my own car at all anymore  8)
