I'm assuming that you took the text from the manual, and if so, then it is a very ambiguous statement. If left in the lock position, then it could have simply said, "Lower the vehicle to the ground", rather than adding "to driving position". However, if it is in the lock position, how will this create pressure in the strut to force any oil to leak out ?

The exact procedure for the leak tests is given in the library, section 32 "Chassis suspension systems", job 515  "Checking tube shocks for leaks"

Thanks Koan. That clears that up, but I am still at a loss as to why the system is not pressurised when testing - or is it ?

It will be pressurised, the middle position of the knob just isolates the front and back sections from the supply reservoir and regulator. If the car is at near normal height there is pressure in struts/spheres.

I would take the car for a drive to get the suspension hot, or at least run the engine to get pressure up and follow the 32-515 procedure.

EDIT: the leak back lies are the nylon lines, they are not under pressure at any time.

Thanks Koan for clearing that up. Not having had to change any spheres and/or struts, this is a good learning curve - but I'm also thankful that I haven't needed to - especially from a financial prespective !

Mforcer - if you are reading this, and I'm sure you are, could we have the "Library" highlighted a little better, as it was formerly ? I know where it is (now), but any newbies might have trouble finding it.

No problem Styria. I just have a problem with the words "driving position" as this implies that you are able to drive it - which you can't (or shouldn't) if in the centre position.

Gee thanks for all the replies guys.  I've been away from the forum for a couple of days due to internet connection problems.  I think I am clear on my couse now.

Continuing from what styria has said, I have replaced the pump, and am in the orocess of cleaning the tank and replacing the hoses under it.  Once that is done, I will have to flush, and bleed and drive to get everything pressurised before I commence the leak rate test.

Update - today I finally received the left front strut - the last outstanding item for trusty rusty's suspension project.
