6.9 Plug Leads

Does anyone know if there is a difference between specification or cable lengths between the 450 and the 6.9 motors or whether they are interchangeable?

I don't know about the length, as these are not indicated, but 450 SEL has a 117 part number and 6.9's have a 100 part number. If they were interchangeable, they would likely have the same part number.

Thanks guys,

One lead is cracked in the insulation and I will temporarily replace it with a 450 lead and measure the resistance on all the rest.

I had an old set of 6.9 leads on my 6.9, so I changed to a 450 Bosch set that fitted. The #4 is a little short but it will fit. (I think the new set was probably a little longer than an original 450 set).

There was no difference in performance. These 450 sets had 4ohms resistors.

Then the other day I received my new set of 6.9 leads (from AutohausAZ) with the 5ohm resistors and have now fitted them.

Again no difference in performance. (But at least the leads are longer.)

There is a guy in Melbourne that sells 280 plug leads (Bosch) on eBay.
If you ask him, he will sell you the 450 leads as well.
The 280s were about AU$100 and the 450s were about AU$130.

Interesting, the bosch ones I got for the 350 which are 450 ones are 1kΩ.  The original Beru set I had were 1kΩ though one stand in replacement had no markings and another had an orange suppressor with 5kΩ stamped on it.  My old rotor was 5kΩ too.

WGB, the Ω rating should be stamped on the suppressor.  Here's some suppressor markings I recorded to see if they match any of yours, 450 and 6.9.  Although the individual sets may have different part numbers on account of lead lenght and number, I've wondered whether they may share the same suppressors.  Later, I'll post the 280 ones I have too.

Suppressors? My 6.9 leads don't have any, they appear to be the usual resistive leads.

They are a bit old and dirty but I know they are OK, I decided that when a dealership said a set would cost around $2000.

Non dealers have the big plug ends, distributor ends and resistive wire, a set could be made up for much less.

Yes, this is the guy that I bought my 280 plug leads from.
I also bought a set of 450 leads that just fitted my 6.9.
Since then I bought some from AutohausAZ but I didn't notice any difference in performance.
If you ask him, he will sell you a set for a 450 for about $130.

Thanks Guys,

I have replaced the one damaged lead temporarily with a bright blue 32 inch "top-gun" one ($5) and have ordered a new set from Autohausaz at USD$102 plus $35 postage.

The picture on their site shows them in the same protective plastic sleeves as the (presumably) originals that were on my car with cylinder numberings. We'll see what arrives. The original cables, sleeves and cable clips are very brittle and break up on the slightest movement.

Given that Chris recently spent $2,000 on a full service and that he had had some rough running problems the lead with exposed copper cables and wrapped in red (and somewhat obvious) tape (which did not actually cover the exposed copper) is an indictment on the shop that did the service.

Are the plastic cable holders on the cam-covers still available as they are brittle and I have already broken one.

They appear superficially the same as the ones on the 117 motor but positioned differently. I will check my EPC later and see if they are still listed and what their numbers are.

There is quite a story behind these. The short answer is NO. They have been replaced by a 6 wire holder, not 4.

A shiny new set of plug leads and coil lead  arrrived today from the U.S of A - They have caps that say Beru 5 K Ohm and cost US$133.53 which included Freight of US$32 - Part No 100 150 01 19

I will fit them when I replace the gasket in my right hand Cam Cover.

I have also set the Parts Manager at Diesel motors to work to see what he can find for the plastic cable clips that break very easily (I've got to get something out of him for the cost of the gasket)
